Even in defeat to Liverpool in midweek, Newcastle still put in a very impressive performance, only being beaten by virtually the last kick of the game in the 98th minute.

New signing Alexander Isak looked impressive in his first appearance, scoring on his debut and was unlucky he had another goal ruled offside. He will pose teams problems throughout the rest of the season.

They have only claimed one victory so far this season, however, and Eddie Howe will be figuring out how to turn draws into wins going forward.

Crystal Palace have had an up and down start to their campaign, experiencing all three possible results from their five games so far. They currently sit in 13th, two places below Newcastle, with five points.

Patrick Vieira’s men are fast, energetic and technically excellent in the final third of the pitch, but it is their defence that has been letting them down so far.

This should be an entertaining battle.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

New signing Isak has hit the ground running

Won their last game against Palace

Reasons to be fearful:

Key players Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes could miss out again

Will need to cope defensively against Palace’s attackers

Newcastle are attracting plenty of positive feedback for the play right now, and rightly so judging by their first five games of the season.

Their progress has been clear under Eddie Howe, with his squad now playing an attractive brand of football that can break opponents down and score goals. They have been better defensively too.

The reason they remain in the bottom half of the league has been down to the current inability to turn draws into wins. There were three on the bounce against Brighton, Manchester City and Wolves and they had opportunities to win all of them.

The arrival of Alexander Isak will improve their chances in that area, although the Magpies are likely to miss Saint-Maximin and Guimaraes once again through injury.

Can they cope without that creativity against Palace?

Star Man – Alexander Isak

The new signing took his first goal in English football smartly and would have had another if he hadn’t been six inches offside. Looks like a brilliant signing and will work wonders for Newcastle this season.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Front players can be devastating going forward

Could make a few signings on transfer deadline day

Reasons to be fearful

Conceded in every game this season

Need to have more control over games rather than just counterattacking

Looking at the Premier League table, there’s very little to separate Newcastle and Crystal Palace, although it is Palace who you feel have had the bumpier start to the season.

Their two defeats have been somewhat expected, against Arsenal and Manchester City, while they’ve put in some good performances to win against Aston Villa and draw against Liverpool and Brentford.

If they could solidify their defence a little more, you feel they could make a push for the top half of the league. In that regard, they may look to bring in additional players on the final day of the transfer window, though we’ll have to wait and see whether that happens.

Against Newcastle, their opponent’s style of play could suit them. The Magpies will come out and attack, while Palace generally prefer to counter with pace and directness.

They will need to control games a little better if their form is to improve, however.

Star Man – Wilf Zaha

Returned from a knock against Brentford and scored the opening goal, before his side were pegged back for a draw. His side rely heavily on Zaha’s goals and overall play.

Newcastle will look to dictate play

Palace are usually happier playing on the counterattack

Can either side grab a rare victory?

It’s early in the season, but already we’re seeing certain patterns emerging among the teams.

Newcastle and Palace have one win each from their five games, so a second victory would do nicely. They could both push into the top half with a win, depending on other teams’ performances.

This game will come down to moments in each other’s penalty areas. Both have the quality to score, but can they defend?

At home, you’d feel Newcastle are slight favourites.
