Sensational pair Newcastle and Fulham go head-to-head for European positions
Newcastle to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' Park
Bet NowA clash between two of the most impressive teams this season sees Newcastle host Fulham in what should be an engaging contest.
The Magpies have drawn their previous two games in the league, also suffering defeat in the FA Cup, although that isn’t expected to derail what has been an excellent season so far.
They remain in the top four thanks to going unbeaten in all but one of their games this season. Eddie Howe’s team also have a Carabao Cup semi-final to look forward to on the horizon.
Fulham have been equally impressive, you would have to argue. Few gave Marco Silva’s men much chance of survival this season, but they’ve flipped the league on its head to sit in 6th place currently.
Their recent win over Chelsea is arguably their standout result of the season so far, although that is backed up by multiple positive performances elsewhere.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Only Man City and Liverpool have been better at home since November 2021
Unbeaten in six home games against Fulham
Reasons to be fearful:
No goals from their last two league games
Could find themselves out of the top four if they lose here
Newcastle’s home results have been nothing short of exemplary since Eddie Howe took over as manager 14 months ago.
The turnaround at St. James’ has been a credit to the manager, but also the players that have upped their game during that period. Sven Botman, a key defensive signing, hasn’t lost a game since signing in August.
As such, the Magpies are aiming to go 14 games unbeaten in the league, which would equal their club record from 1950. They’re also on the verge of keeping their fifth consecutive clean sheet.
Their winning run has halted of late, drawing their last two. Defeat here could see Spurs overtake them into the top four.
One decision for the manager to make relates to Joelinton, who was charged with drink-driving this week. Otherwise Howe could select a similar team to recent games.
Star Man – Calum Wilson
Wilson has four goals in his four appearances against Fulham in the past. Has scored in his last four Newcastle games and could probably do with a goal here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Win over Chelsea is the icing on the cake for Fulham
Have now won four consecutive Premier League games
Reasons to be fearful
Haven’t beaten Newcastle since 2009
Three defeats from their last six games against Magpies
Regarding their success this season, Fulham deserve just about as much credit as Newcastle have received so far.
For the first time since 1966, Fulham have won four consecutive Premier League games, showcasing the confidence that is flowing through the club these days.
They’ve had some fine results this season but the win over Chelsea most recently was the icing on the cake. It took them six points ahead of Chelsea and four points off the top four.
European football is now a distinct possibility for Silva’s team but there is still a long way to go this season and they cannot afford to take their foot off the accelerator.
Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic
Mitrovic returns after a one-match ban and has his sights set on his former club. The Serbian’s goal ratio has been superb this season and you wouldn’t put it past him to score here.
Plenty of chances at both ends
Energy in midfield should create entertaining game
Magpies’ home form to pay off
This should be a corker of a game between two of the league’s most in-form teams, and two that can turn on the style as well as defend properly.
You can never underestimate the power of Newcastle’s home support to drag their team forward and you feel that this may be the difference between the two.
Fulham have the ability to beat anyone, as we’ve seen recently, but you’d back Newcastle to claim three points.
Newcastle to win 2-1
