The progress that Newcastle continue to make under Eddie Howe, and their Saudi Arabian owners, has been nothing short of remarkable.

To think that, only a year ago, they looked set for a relegation battle that could have sent them down to the Championship before the big money came in to save them.

Eddie Howe has worked wonders, not only with the new recruits but also with the existing ones. To link signings like Guimaraes with Joelinton and Almiron has been great to watch.

A year ago, Leeds were a team fighting for the same positions as Newcastle, although have now found themselves in their dust.

For every win that Leeds pick up, two defeats seem to follow and there is little consistency about Jesse Marsch’s team.

You would expect them to have too much quality to be dragged into a relegation battle, but that is exactly what they face unless they can improve across the pitch.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have scored in their last 10 meetings with Leeds

On a six-game winning streak for the first time in a decade

Reasons to be fearful:

Haven’t won seven in a row for 26 years

Shelvey is out for two months while Isak and Krafth remain unavailable

Twelve months and £200m in transfer signings later, Newcastle are now part of the Premier League elite – at least for the time being.

They were 19th at this stage last year, 10 points behind their opponents here. Although the injection of money has gone a long way in helping them, you cannot underestimate the work done by Eddie Howe and the players.

All of the numbers point in Newcastle’s favour right now: they have the best defensive record in the league, on course for a club-record number of wins for a calendar year and looking to equal their record of seven consecutive wins.

While they haven’t beaten Leeds at home since 2004, much has happened since then that will make Eddie Howe confident of securing yet another victory here.

Star Man – Miguel Almiron

The player who just cannot stop scoring right now. The Paraguay international has nine goals in his last 14 appearances and has been electric this season.

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Will give it everything needing victory

Tyler Adams is fit to return to the team

Reasons to be fearful

Just one away victory in the league this season

     Have conceded a club-record 72 goals in 2022

Leeds have been one of the hardest Premier League sides to predict ever since they returned to the Premier League three seasons ago.

Then under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds played a brand of electric, attacking football that few could keep up with when at full pelt.

Now, under Jesse Marsch, they have lost some of that zip and zest that earned big wins and plenty of fans. They sit in 15th currently and there is permanent rumours of Marsch’s job being under threat.

They have lost their last four matches in the month of December, a stat which doesn’t bode well here. They’ve also lost four of their last six and have conceded 72 goals in 2022.

They will need to be at their fluent best to topple this Newcastle side.

Star Man – Rodrigo

You look at this Leeds side and wonder where the goals will come from sometimes. Rodrigo is the best they have at putting the ball in the back of the net right now, having scored nine in 15 games.

     Should be a fast-paced game

     Both sides to have chances

Newcastle’s solid defence to hold firm

Both Newcastle and Leeds know their way to the back of the net and they can both play attractive, high-tempo football.

What Leeds don’t have is a solid, organised defence to fall back on when their attackers aren’t at full tilt.

Newcastle have the meanest backline in the Premier League and you would back them to keep Leeds quiet throughout the game, while their attackers do the business at the other end.
