Newcastle and Leeds are both out of form currently, with the home side losing six of their last seven games in all competitions and their manager under serious pressure to save his job.

It’s unclear whether the result in this match will be the deciding factor for Steve Bruce’s chances of continuing as manager, but he’ll need a much-improved performance compared with what he’s been seeing recently.

Their dismal defeat against Aston Villa in the FA Cup was the tip of the iceberg after a string of poor results that included losing against bottom of the table Sheffield United.

Leeds aren’t in a great place right now either. Despite being in a healthier 12th position, they’ve also lost their last three matches, including an embarrassment against Crawley in the FA Cup.

Bielsa will know his players can respond, as they have done after defeats this season, but he’ll want to get back to winning ways quickly.

Newcastle United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LLLLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won eight out of last 12 meetings against Leeds

Steve Bruce has never lost a home match vs. Leeds

Reasons to be fearful:

     Winless in eight league matches

Are recording their lowest shots on goal since 2003

Newcastle are sliding slowly but surely towards the relegation zone. The gap is seven precious points currently, but as we know, a few results either way could drag them down or send them clear.

At the moment, Steve Bruce appears perilously close to the sack, having overseen a side who have slipped out of both domestic cup competitions in recent weeks alongside plummeting towards the bottom of the table.

They are not without talented players – Callum Wilson could do a good job for most sides in the top half of the table, while the tricky Saint-Maximin made his first appearance against Villa after a long absence with Covid-19.

There are a number of injury concerns, with Dummett, Fernandez and Clark all doubts for this one.

Star Man – Allan Saint-Maximin

If Newcastle can get this young talent back up to speed quickly after illness, his creativity to help spark the recovery their season needs.

Leeds United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWLLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Can complete the league double over Newcastle

Have scored in all but one of their nine away fixtures this season

Reasons to be fearful:

In danger of losing four on the bounce without scoring

Second-worst defence record in the league

Leeds are also in the middle of a spell of bad form, having lost their last three games in all competitions.

Though their situation is not as bad as their opponents, they’ll be looking to find a way to winning this one to avoid going the longest without a victory under Marcelo Bielsa.

The Peacocks are experiencing a mini goal drought, having not scored in any of their last three matches after putting five past West Brom in their final match of 2020.

They have the ability to hit back in this one, of course. After previous defeats in the league, they’ve scored four past Fulham, three over Villa and five past this weekend’s opponents Newcastle.

Star Man – Patrick Bamford

Has only three goals from his last 10 matches, but will surely get chances against this leaky Magpie defence.

Leeds will have the majority of chances

     Possession will be tight

     Both sides to score

With the form of these two sides rather the worse for wear, it’s difficult to see where the response will come from.

Leeds have history of bouncing back from defeats with big wins, but Newcastle are approaching the point of no return where their players need to start playing for their Premier League survival.

A point wouldn’t be the worst result for these two sides here.

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds
