Newcastle United vs Manchester United FC Match Prediction & Analysis

In a repeat of the recent Carabao Cup final at Wembley, Newcastle host Manchester United and will seek revenge for that defeat.

Eddie Howe’s men have seen their league position slip in recent months, but back-to-back victories have placed them back in contention once again.

Newcastle can go above Manchester United with victory and could even slip ahead of Tottenham if they fail to win.

Manchester United are looking to improve their league form here, with the Red Devils going two games without victory. One of those was the humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Still, United are in pole position for a top three finish and a win here would move them further into the lead for that particular race.

They have a number of injury and suspension issues to consider, of course.

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Win would ensure Newcastle have 50 points for the first time in 12 seasons

     Only Manchester City and Liverpool have beaten Newcastle at home since 2021

Reasons to be fearful:

     No clean sheets from their last seven games

     Just one home win from their last nine against United

Are Newcastle finding their feet once again at the right time?

It appeared that the Magpies were having a wobble at the start of the year, losing their top-four status and struggling to win games that they would have earlier in the season.

Now, with two consecutive wins and players looking rejuvenated, it would appear that Newcastle are back in the race for Champions League football.

They will overtake Manchester United if they beat them this weekend. They certainly have the motivation for doing so, having lost to the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup final recently.

Here, Nick Pope and Sven Botman should be fit to start the game, while Joelinton returns from suspension. Anthony Gordon, however, is doubtful with an ankle injury.

Star Man – Alexander Isak

Although injuries have hampered Isak’s first season in English football, there have been flashes of his brilliance. He has three goals in his last two appearances, helping Newcastle to win consecutive games.

     Have won 14 away games against Newcastle – their highest against any opponent

     Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial should be fit to play here

Reasons to be fearful

     Injury doubts over the likes of Sabitzer and Varane

     Only three teams have conceded more away goals this season

For everything they have achieved this season under Erik ten Hag, including their first trophy since 2017, United must be cautious that they don’t allow their Premier League position to slip.

With that disastrous defeat to Liverpool, followed by a disappointing draw at home to Southampton, United have allowed the likes of Spurs and Newcastle to gain ground on them.

They will slip outside of the top four this weekend if Tottenham win and Newcastle beat United. They also face something of a midfield crisis, with Casemiro suspended, Eriksen still injured and Sabitzer doubtful.

It could be that we see the old partnership of Fred and McTominay in force once again. Whatever the manager decides, he needs a result from them here.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

It’s a boost that Rashford appears to be fit enough to play here. His 27 goals this season have propelled Manchester United into the top three but they need more to stay there.
