The forthcoming match between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur at Newcastle's St. James Park stadium promises to be a captivating contest between two sides that believe in the attacking brand of football. The last time these two teams met at St. James Park, the home side gave a 4-0 beatdown to their guests.

Interestingly, this rivalry is all about goals. In the previous three matches played between the teams, a total of 16 goals were scored. And the Spurs have already been on a hunt for goals as they thumped the hapless Everton by four goals in their first away fixture of the season.

On the contrary, Newcastle has found scoring difficult, as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw versus Bournemouth last week, following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton in the opening week.

Head-to-Head Record -  This rivalry has been close. Both sides have 25 wins each in the 58 matches that have been played between them over the years.

Current Standings - Despite dropping points in their previous game,  the Magpies have found themselves reasonably in a comfortable position of sixth in the table, while Tottenham is positioned one position above them due to their superior goal differential.

Newcastle United Preview

This season's Magpies have been a mixed bag. In their first game against Southampton, they demonstrated determination to come back and win despite being down a man for more than 70 minutes. Meanwhile, in the second game, they put on an insipid performance  against a team that ended in the bottom half of the table last season, forcing them to settle for a draw.

Eddie Howie’s Entertainer’s ?

Last season, the Magpies were dubbed 'Eddie Howie's Entertainers' for their attacking style of football, which culminated in them breaking a club record for the most goals scored in a season (85). However, based on what we witnessed in the first two rounds, they have been far from entertaining, with an xG of 2.33, the lowest among the top ten teams at the moment. Against Bournemouth, in the first half, they had an xG of 0.15 with just one shot on target.

Form and concerns

Whatever success that the Magpies had last season was built on Alexander Isak’s 21 goals. However, he is yet to find the met this season. Meanwhile, Joelington, a vital component of the midfield, had a dismal performance in the past encounter, being dispossessed 22 times as he and the backline were continuously wilting by the pressing of Bournemouth's front four.

Tactical Approach

The Magpies' victory over the Spurs last season was centred on a strategy of attacking weaknesses in their defensive lines with a mix of aggressive pressing and quick transitions. Howe will have to use a similar approach here, but he may need to change up the starting eleven. Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes, who are more offensively capable, should start ahead of Lloyd Kelly and Jacob Murphy.

Newcastle Starting Lineup - Pope(Goalkeeper); Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall/Kelly(Defenders); Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton (Midfielders); Barnes, Isak, Gordon (Forwards)

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou made an intriguing prediction about his team's possibilities for the current season before the season began. "Usually in my second season I win things." It's difficult to disagree with a coach who has won trophies at every club he has managed. However, it appeared that that comment had put too much pressure on his players, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Leicester City. Nonetheless, all fears were put to rest as they secured a comprehensive victory in their second game.

Son Heung-Min on Song

With Spurs’ new signing, Dominic Solanke out injured, Postecoglou had to depend on his most trusted teammate Heung-Son to do the duties of the centre forward. And the South Korean did it to perfection with two well paced goals. Notably, Son also has a decent record against Newcastle as he has scored in three of his six matches against them.

Tactical Approach

Defenders have taken a more aggressive role in the attack under Postecoglou. As shown in the game against Everton, where he utilised Destiny Udogie more as an inverted full-back and Pedro Porro mostly as a wing-back. However, what makes this squad more dangerous is the ability of its centre-backs to assist the attack. Romero and van de van each had a goal and an assist in their past encounter. Given Newcastle's struggles against Bournemouth's press, one can only wonder what Postecoglou will do with his 4-3-3 system, which might easily be converted into a 3-3-5.

Tottenham Hotspur Starting Lineup - Vicario (Goalkeeper): Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie(Defenders); Sarr, Bissouma, Maddison (Midfielders); Kulisevski, Johnson, Son (Forwards)

The Spurs are back at St James' Park. They haven't won a game at this stadium since a 3-2 victory against Newcastle in 2021. Spurs' past two games at the ground were in defeats of 2-6 and 0-4. Interestingly, Spurs gave up five goals in the first 21 minutes of their 2-6 loss.

In fact, in the last six meetings between the teams, 30 goals have been scored. With both teams continuing to play offensive football, there's no reason for this game to be any different.

Tottenham Hotspur improved significantly in their most recent encounter, while Newcastle are still struggling to find their footing. As a result, we believe the Spurs will snap their losing record at St. James' Park on Sunday.
