Make or break time for Newcastle and Tottenham as they face nine games to save their season
Tottenham to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' Park
Bet NowNewcastle owner Mike Ashley has continued to stick with manager Steve Bruce despite shocking form this season, dragging the club into a relegation scrap after a string of poor results and performances alike.
Many fans have called for the sacking of Bruce, though at this late stage of the season, you’d feel that there is little a new manager could achieve after such a disappointing campaign.
Perhaps having fans back in the stadium is just what Newcastle need to kick them into gear, but they’ll have to manage without that for a little while longer at least.
Although Spurs crashed out of the Europa League in dismal fashion, their Premier League form has been rather good of late. Despite a disappointing defeat to Arsenal, they have won four of their last five games in order to give them a shot at Champions League football next season.
There is plenty at stake for both sides here.
Form Guide (all comps): LDDDL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Allan Saint-Maximin could return from injury here
The International break has given them the opportunity to reset
Reasons to be fearful:
Two wins from the last 18 is a dismal record
Lost five of their last six home meetings with Spurs
Newcastle will once again be without top scorer Callum Wilson through injury, although creative attacker Saint-Maximin should be fit to return in a much needed boost for Steve Bruce’s side.
They have felt the absence of their attacking players recently, with wins desperately hard to come by for the Magpies, with just two victories from the last 18 matches in the league. It’s a run which has seen them slip from a comfortable 12th place to where they are now, just two points off relegation.
With Fulham in 18th playing better of late, there is a real chance that Newcastle could slip into the bottom three at any moment, and should they lose to Spurs here, could be in real trouble by the end of the weekend.
Star Man – Miguel Almiron
Returned from injury before the International break, and his side could really use his goal threat here.
Form Guide (all comps): WWLLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Great recent record against Newcastle
Have won four of their last five league matches
Reasons to be fearful:
Nine league defeats this season equals Mourinho’s worst ever season
Face a real uphill battle to finish in the top four
Spurs will have one eye on the top four this weekend, especially after watching Chelsea get thrashed 5-2 by West Brom 24 hours before they kick off.
That result means Spurs can overtake their London rivals on goal difference with victory here, although West Ham could overtake them both with a win of their own.
Either way, for Spurs to still be in with a shot of a top four place after a dire run of form earlier in the season is testament to their battling qualities, not to mention the brilliance of Kane and Son upfront.
They have a good record over Newcastle too, having won five of the last six away meetings. Boosted by the return of Son and Sergio Reguilon from injury, they should feel positive about earning a result here.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Has 43 goal involvements already this season, two behind his all time record for a campaign.
Spurs will sense a huge opportunity to go 4th
They should boss possession
However, a Newcastle goal could make things interesting
Understandably, Spurs are heavy favourites to win here. Their positive league form of late, coupled with Newcastle’s dismal record makes for a fairly one-sided game on paper.
With Newcastle getting one or two players back, it could make things interesting if they were to score first.
But with the undoubted striking quality Spurs possess, they should have too much quality.
Tottenham to win 2-0
