Newcastle and Tottenham clash this weekend, going head-to-head for a top four spot with only a month or so of the season remaining.

The Magpies currently occupy that precious 4th place, a position that would grant them access to the Champions League next season. It’s been some time since they welcomed elite football at St. James’s Park.

Eddie Howe’s men were thrashed in surprising style by Aston Villa last weekend, with the Magpies slipping from 3rd as a result. Can they cement their current spot with victory here?

Tottenham also lost last weekend, and haven’t been able to put together a consistent run of form too often throughout the season.

Christian Stellini has been asked to make the most out of the remains of a poor season for Spurs and an unlikely charge into the top four would be the perfect end to the campaign.

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Have conceded just 24 goals this season – four fewer than any other team

     Beat Spurs earlier this season

Reasons to be fearful:

     Just one clean sheet from their last 10 games – against Manchester United

     Won just one of their last home games against Tottenham

Eddie Howe expressed how bitterly disappointed he was with his players after their abject performance at Villa Park last weekend, something he’s not had to do too often since he took over at the club.

The Magpies remain in a strong position, although Manchester United now hold onto 3rd. Howe’s men can reclaim that position here, as the Red Devils play in the FA Cup this weekend.

That defeat last week should motivate Newcastle to return to winning ways here – while their record over the years against Spurs is poor, their home results this season have been excellent.

Howe has his own personal battle with Spurs ongoing, having lost eight of his 12 league games in charge against them.

He’ll be confident of fixing that here, although the mercurial Allan Saint-Maximin has been ruled out through injury.

Star Man – Alexander Isak

Was unusually poor against an energetic Villa last weekend but should get more space and time on the ball here. His pace in behind can hurt this brittle Spurs defence.

     Lost five of six league games against top four teams this season

     No wins from their last six away matches in all competitions

Tottenham, for all their disappointments this season, still have the ability to pull off a big result when they need it. 

Yes, they have been inconsistent and, at times, painful to watch. With the likes of Kane and Son, however, they retain the match-winning qualities that all teams would be happy to have.

They remain just three points outside the top four. A win here wouldn’t be enough on its own – they have a worse goal difference than Newcastle – but it would be a massive step.

Their away record is poor of late, winning none of their last six, while they haven’t won a game outside of London since October, taking two points from 15 available.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Kane is just two goals shy of Wayne Rooney’s Premier League total of 208. After that, only Alan Shearer stands in his way at the top of the pile with 260. Kane’s form this season has been good, even if Spurs’ has not.
