West Ham are holding their nerve in the race for a top four position, so far at least. With Chelsea and Liverpool right on their tails, as well as Tottenham and Everton not far behind, the Hammers are leading the way currently, though things can change quickly in the Premier League.

They have three wins from their previous five games, as good as any of those chasing teams, and are actually a point off 3rd, as Leicester’s form has dipped recently.

The arrival of Jesse Lingard has paved the way for a sharp increase in their chances of holding onto 4th spot, but here they play a side in a survival race.

Newcastle have seen an upturn of form of their own recently, earning a desperately needed win at the weekend, their first in eight matches. On the brink of going into the bottom three a week or two ago, the Magpies have pulled six points clear of Fulham, and will want to continue their improvement here.

Newcastle United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DDLDW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Just one defeat from last six

     Won the reverse fixture 2-0

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one victory in eight games shows improvement needed

Consistency has been a problem all season

Newcastle have been the kings of the comeback recently, coming from behind to draw against Tottenham the week before last, followed by scoring twice to overcome Burnley and claim three points last weekend.

Even better, their good form has coincided with a bad period for relegation rivals Fulham, who have now lost four on the bounce, and the Magpies will be breathing a small sigh of relief to see them six points ahead in the table, plus a game in hand to come.

There is still plenty of work to do, of course. Newcastle’s next few fixtures include Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester City. There’s a good chance they won’t take any points from those games, so they must push hard while they can.

With players such as Saint-Maximin and Wilson back, anything’s possible.

Star Man – Callum Wilson

He’s scored more goals against West Ham than any other side in the Premier League, having netted eight times.

West Ham United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLDWW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have scored nine goals in their last three games

Equalled the club record of 16 wins for a season

Reasons to be fearful:

     Tough fixture list

Have been open at the back recently

West Ham won’t be kidding themselves that simply because they are in the top four at this moment, they’ll remain there at the end of the season without some serious hard work.

With two huge clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool both within winning distance, any slip ups will likely see the Hammers drop out of the top four.

They’ve been brilliant, though. While Jesse Lingard’s arrival has taken much of the attention, the whole team has played at a consistently high level this season. Jarrod Bowen, for example, has scored in his last three games and has been involved in more goals than any other West Ham player.

Can they continue here, though? While they’ve scored plenty of goals recently, they’ve conceded plenty too, and if their attacking game is slightly off, Newcastle could capitalise.

Star Man – Jesse Lingard

Has eight goals and three assists in his first nine games of the club.

     West Ham should dictate possession

     Expect goals at both ends

Both sides require a win to stay confident

If Newcastle lose here, they’ll still feel confident of survival, such is that six-point gap to the team beneath them. Should West Ham lose, they’ll find it very difficult to recover with Liverpool and Chelsea hot on their heels.

The Hammers are the favourites to claim three points here, especially with the form of Lingard, Bowen and others, however Newcastle can certainly cause an upset at the away side aren’t at their best.

West Ham to win 2-1
