Nottingham Forest against Aston Villa is a fascinating Midlands derby, due to the position of the two teams in the league right now.

Forest have delivered well below expectations since spending £150m on new players in the summer, failing to show signs of the quality that earned them promotion to the Premier League in the first place.

Interestingly, manager Steve Cooper was handed a new three-year contract this week, securing him to the club when others feared that his job could be under pressure after a poor run of form.

They must start to pick up points before long, however. They cannot afford to be left behind with teams all vying for points in a busy October.

Aston Villa are marginally better off and have now gone on a three-game unbeaten run.

Steven Gerrard can’t relax too much, however. There have only been two wins for Villa fans to cheer about, with just one in the last six.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

New contract for Steve Cooper shows faith in him

Scored four goals in their last two home games

Reasons to be fearful:

Losing 4-0 to fellow strugglers Leicester was a huge blow

     Tough run of upcoming fixtures

The news of Steve Cooper receiving a new contract until 2025 could help to settle things down around Nottingham Forest.

The players are certain of who their manager will be, despite their poor start to the season, and it’s clear that Forest need to start trusting his coaching, as they did last season when they gained promotion.

At home, they have been better than they have away. They secured their only win of the season so far, against West Ham, and have scored four goals in their last two games.

Here, they must take the game to an Aston Villa side that isn’t particularly sure of itself either at the moment.

While Cooper has the same squad of players available to him here, he is likely to make one or two changes from the side that were thrashed by Leicester last weekend, condemning Forest to bottom of the league.

A big performance here is just what they need.

Star Man – Jesse Lingard

The former Manchester United player needs to start coming up with the goods for his new team. His side often lack ideas going forward, while Lingard at his best can provide that.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Three games unbeaten is their longest stretch of the season

Should have taken three points against Leeds last weekend

Reasons to be fearful

Four defeats from eight games have put pressure on Gerrard

Lost their last game against a newly promoted side

Aston Villa are a strange one to crack.

They have some excellent players in their squad, a manager who has won trophies in Scotland, and a big transfer budget to match.

For some reason, however, things just aren’t seeming to click for them these days.

Gerrard cannot seem to work out his best starting XI, particularly going forward. The likes of Coutinho, Watkins, Ings, Bailey and Buendia are all talented players, but he’s found it difficult to shoehorn them all in.

At least they have been more solid in their last few games. Starting with a positive draw against Manchester City, they have since beaten Southampton and taken a point from Leeds in a game they should have won.

If they can claim three points here and move up the table, you could say that Villa have perhaps turned a corner. Positively, he’ll have fullback Matty Cash available after returning from injury.

Star Man – Philippe Coutinho

Can Gerrard get the best out of Coutinho? The Brazilian is often too hot and cold for the fans’ liking, but he possesses undoubted quality and an ability to change a game.

     Will be a hard-fought game

     Could be a low-scoring contest

Villa’s extra quality should count in their favour

Defeat in this game will leave either side in a good deal of trouble.

Nottingham Forest cannot afford to fall any further behind the teams around them near the bottom, while Aston Villa expect to be much higher up the table than they currently are.

On paper, it should come down to which team has the greater quality, which is Aston Villa.

However, you wonder if Nottingham Forest can finally click into gear and show their fans what they’re made of.
