Chelsea delivered a much-needed win in their first game back after the World Cup break, easing the pressure on their shoulders after a difficult period under new manager Graham Potter.

Despite a promising start under Potter, Chelsea went six games without victory in the run-up to the World Cup which saw their league position slip to 8th.

They are now a full six points behind the top four, although a winning run could change that. They have a jam-packed January coming up, which could help define the rest of their season.

Nottingham Forest have a mountain to climb if they are to recover from their current position. With relegation looming, big changes need to be made in order to think about survival.

Steve Cooper has recently signed a new contract to continue as manager, but if results carry on like this the ownership may have to reconsider a change at the top.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

All three victories this season have come at home

10 of their 11 league goals have come at the City Ground

Reasons to be fearful:

Lost each of their last seven games to Chelsea

Looked toothless in their recent defeat to Man United

The signs were starting to look more positive for Nottingham Forest leading up to the World Cup, with a string of decent performances and good results to match.

However, a toothless display against Manchester United showed how large the gap in quality is between Forest and the teams above them. To then face Chelsea straight after is hard on a team facing relegation.

More positively, Forest are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions at the City Ground. At home, they have been a far better team than when on their travels, collecting almost all of their points and goals.

Here, Forest will miss Jesse Lingard, who limped off in the game against Manchester United, while Dean Henderson will return in goal after being ineligible for the last match.

Star Man – Taiwo Awoniyi

Now looks like the established number nine at Forest after scoring in all three starts at home this season. He will hope to have more service into him than in the game against Manchester United.

Chelsea FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Good record against Forest

Win over Bournemouth was as welcome as it was deserved

Reasons to be fearful

On the verge of losing four away games consecutively

Have already matched their away goals conceded number from the entire last season

The win over Bournemouth could help to define Chelsea’s season, with the club needing a turning point after their poor start to the campaign.

The Blues are eight points adrift of the top four heading into this game, so the margin for error going forward is slim to none.

Potter must now focus on a core group of players that he believes can grow together and win games, rather than chopping and changing his tactics in every match.

Chelsea’s away record is dismal of late and could lose their fourth in a row here. However, they now have something to hang onto after that previous win and will look to build a winning run.

Star Man – Kai Havertz

Still has a way to go to convince people that he is a genuine striker, but continues to score important goals for Chelsea. He has five goals and an assist so far this season.

     Chelsea will dictate possession

Forest will be doomed if they go behind early

Havertz and Sterling could be among the goals

Chelsea will see this as a huge chance to win back-to-back games and put some pressure on the teams above them. They have a big month – six games in all – and needs wins from most of them to rise up the table.

Nottingham Forest need to start winning games quickly in order to improve their own league position. Wolves, West Ham and Everton will all aim to improve too, so they can’t hang about.

If Chelsea dictate the play as we know they can, they should make short work of this Forest team.
