Nottingham Forest ended the month of January by signing their 29th new player since returning to the Premier League – a staggering number of new acquisitions within the space of six months or so.

Steve Cooper has done well to knit a side together capable of playing at a good level, as we have seen more of lately. They are unbeaten in their last four in the Premier League, although they are out of both cups.

They now seem to have a good balance between youth and experience among the squad, especially with Champions League-winning goalkeeper Keylor Navas joining recently.

Leeds also invested in the transfer window, although their most high-profile signing is Weston McKennie, who joined on loan from Juventus. The USA international will add pace and dynamism in forward areas.

The Yorkshire team badly need a victory, with their most recent league win coming back in November, before the league paused for the World Cup.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

New signings will provide experience and quality

Haven’t lost to Leeds in their last 12 meetings

Reasons to be fearful:

Recorded only 64 shots on target this season – a league low

Played in a midweek defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup

For all the signings that Nottingham Forest have made this season – there have been 29 – the loan arrival of Keylor Navas could be one of the most important.

The goalkeeper has three Champions League titles with Real Madrid, plus a whole host of other trophies from his time in Spain and France. With Dean Henderson out for a while, his experience will be key.

Other than the two defeats to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, Forest have been in fine form of late. They’ve only lost twice in their last 10 league games, and unbeaten in their last six at home.

Another recent signing, Andre Ayew, could come into the squad in place of the injured Morgan Gibbs-White, who faces a spell on the sidelines.

Star Man – Brennan Johnson

Johnson’s pace is an asset against any opponent, and gave Manchester United a tough time on occasion. If he can add more goals to his game, he’ll be a real threat going forward.

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

The arrival of Weston McKennie will add quality upfront

Won all five away games against newly promoted teams since 2020

Reasons to be fearful

Won just two of their last 16 league games

     Tough upcoming fixture list

Leeds have a tough month ahead of them, playing more games than most due to the rescheduling of postponed fixtures before Christmas.

This game is followed by back-to-back clashes with Manchester United, a revived Everton before ending the month with an FA Cup game. It will test the limits of this Leeds squad.

The arrival of Weston McKennie will help. While he has never set the world alight at Juventus, he is an experienced USA international and has the pace and quality to help his new team.

Going into this round of fixtures, Leeds have claimed only five away points this season – a joint-low alongside West Ham and Bournemouth. They need more from their players here.

Star Man – Patrick Bamford

Provided two assists in their recent FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley and has looked good since his return from injury. He now has added competition for his place with the arrival of McKennie and Rutter.

     Possession should be evenly shared

     Both teams have pacey attackers

Forest’s home form should help them secure result

Neither Nottingham Forest nor Leeds can consider themselves safe from a relegation battle with so much of the season left to play.

You would assume that both teams have too much quality to be dragged into the bottom three once again, especially with Nottingham Forest battling their way up the table recently.

Forest’s home form has been impressive recently and you would expect them to continue that here.
