Nottingham Forest in desperate need of points near the bottom meet an entertaining Fulham
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Fulham
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Nottinghamshire, The Nottingham Forest Football ClubBet Now
Nottingham Forest continued to sign new players right up until the end of the transfer window, bringing in 21 new signings in total.
They are yet to set the world alight following those moves and it will take some time before they fully embed themselves into Steve Cooper’s team.
He is a manager in need of a positive result sooner rather than later as teams in and around Forest in the table are picking up points.
The Cottagers have started the season brightly, although lost their last game to high-flying Tottenham.
They will realise they have a great opportunity to bounce back here, against a side struggling to find an identity near the bottom of the table.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Steve Cooper will feel that another week of training will benefit new signings
Striker Brennan Johnson is one of the few positives for Forest currently
Reasons to be fearful:
To lose from 2-0 up against Bournemouth was worrying
Have conceded more than all but two of the teams in the league
Nottingham Forest have slowly but surely slipped into the relegation zone after four defeats from their six games, including in each of their last three.
Particularly damaging will be the defeats against Manchester City, which ended 6-0, and the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth, in which they led by two goals.
Now follows an extremely important part of the season for Forest. They face Fulham, Leicester, Aston Villa and Wolves in a short space of time. All teams in and around them near the bottom end of the division.
If they can start to pick up points there, then they could still enjoy a successful season. If not, you fear what may happen for a newly promoted side with a full squad of players completely new to the club.
Against Fulham, they must play in the same way. Attacking, good football.
Star Man – Brennan Johnson
Forest’s striker has scored 18 league goals since the start of last season, helping his side win promotion. It’s the highest number of goals scored by an under-21 player in England’s top four divisions.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have won their last two home games
Fulham have scored more goals than their opponents this season
Reasons to be fearful
Will fear a response from a Forest side in trouble
Who will score if not Mitrovic?
The best thing you can say about Fulham right now, is that they have been competitive in every game they’ve played so far this season.
Even in the two defeats, which came against Big Six opposition in Arsenal and Tottenham, they only lost by a single goal.
The last time they were in the Premier League, two seasons ago, they were completely outplayed in many of their games and sunk back into the Championship with a whimper.
Now, they appear up for the fight in every single game.
Their main problem relates to their main goalscorer. While Mitrovic is in form, he looks like he could power Fulham higher up the table. If he loses form, or gets injured, who can take up the slack of scoring goals?
Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic
Fulham’s top scorer, with six goals so far this season, can cause this shaky Forest defence some problems if his teammates can get him the ball in good areas.
Can Mitrovic bully Forest’s shaky defence?
Forest must go for the win
An early goal for Fulham could cause heads to drop in the stands
Fulham are comfortable with their playing style, work hard and know they have a top striker in Mitrovic. They also have two wins from their home games so far this season.
Away from home, they are less sure of themselves, and will be wary of a Forest response following their meltdown against Bournemouth.
Forest must continue to play with the same confidence that took them 2-0 up against Bournemouth in the first place.
They have some talented players, but will need to put points on the board before too long.
