With four points from their opening two games, France are almost assured of a place in the knockout stages, unless something goes drastically wrong here.

A point would be enough to secure a top two spot, with a win guaranteeing them top position ahead of Germany, who play their game at the same time against Hungary.

Although France were frustrated against Hungary with just a point coming from a tight encounter, they will feel confident of seeing out the group in style, especially as their opponents need a win themselves.

Portugal are in a dangerous position on three points. Germany are likely to beat Hungary and claim a top two finish, therefore that leaves Portugal needing to beat France to qualify automatically.

Lose this game, and they must hope that three points are enough to qualify in third place.

This is set up to be a great game.

Portugal Preview

World Ranking: 5

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 2016

Predicted Finish This Year: Round of 16

Reasons to be cheerful:

Ronaldo is the joint-top scorer at the tournament

Have scored five goals already in two games

Reasons to be fearful:

Qualification is up in the air if they lose

Have only beaten France once in the last 13 meetings

There is a nightmare scenario that Portugal could find themselves in, finishing bottom of the group if they lose to France and Germany lose to Hungary in their match.

That would send Portugal home without a hope, however unlikely it seems.

Their best hope is to go out and win the game against France, as they did in the final of Euro 2016 when they claimed the trophy on French soil.

Unfortunately, many of their players seemed out of sorts against Germany. Bruno Fernandes looks fatigued after a long season for club and country, while Pepe and Ruben Dias appeared shaky at the back. Only Ronaldo and Jota look capable of causing problems going forward right now.

Star Man – Cristiano Ronaldo

Tried his hardest against Germany, and scored the opener, but his teammates aren’t quite at the same level.

France Preview

World Ranking: 2

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1984/2000

Predicted Finish This Year: Winners

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have plenty of energy left in the tank

Great record against Portugal over the years

Reasons to be fearful:

Have been wasteful in front of goal so far

Defeat could see them slip to third in the table

Many believe that France have several gears left in their locker to step up their game when needed, although you would expect them to show that here when they face a dangerous Portugal side who are in need of victory.

Remarkably, the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema are both without a goal at the tournament so far, and both were accused of being wasteful in front of goal against Hungary, something that could be punished against an opponent with a more dangerous frontline.

Despite that, you would expect France to control the game with their superior midfielders, as well as take their chances in better fashion this time around.

Star Man – Kylian Mbappe

Has looked electric at times without scoring. Can he break his duck here and set France on their way to the knockout stages?

     France should edge possession

Portugal will always be a threat on the break

All three results are realistically possible

Although France will qualify with a draw, they will want to see off the group stage in style by winning and claiming top spot.

They are favourites to win the tournament, but they need to start playing like it, with Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands all eclipsing them so far.

That said, they have world class players wherever you look, and they should win this game.

Portugal will have to cross their fingers and hope three points are enough.

France to win 2-1
