The 11th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off with a double header, and the spotlight firmly falls on hosts Qatar as they take on Palestine at the Al Bayt Stadium on Monday at 10 PM IST.
Ranked 51st, Qatar step in as clear favourites, while 96th-ranked Palestine arrive after a gruelling qualifying run and now face the daunting task of toppling the home side. Even so, they’ll hope to push the hosts — though Qatar will fancy their chances of starting with a win.
Head-to-head Record: Qatar have owned this matchup, winning five of the six meetings, with the only blemish being a solitary draw.
The reigning AFC Asian Cup champions enter the tournament brimming with confidence, fresh off sealing their 2026 World Cup spot — a feat they clinched in dramatic fashion with a decisive 2-1 win over the UAE in their final Round 4 match of the Asian qualifiers.
With that milestone, the Maroons have secured direct World Cup qualification for the first time in their history, having only featured previously in 2022 as hosts, clearly a landmark moment for Qatari football.
Now, their sights shift to finally capturing their first Arab Cup crown, having come close in 1998 and finishing third last time after a dramatic shootout win over Egypt in the third place shootout match. With Julen Lopetegui at the helm, Qatar look balanced, confident and fully equipped to make a serious run for the title.
Almoez Ali and Akram Afif headline Qatar’s charge once again. Ali was unstoppable in the World Cup qualifiers, finishing as the Maroons’ top scorer with 12 goals, while Afif pulled the strings in the midfield brilliantly, leading the team with 11 assists and adding four goals of his own. Together, they remain Qatar’s most dangerous duo.
Qatar Probable Starting Lineup - Abunada (GK) ; Al Oui Pedro Miguel, Boualem Khoukhi, Al-Brake, E. Junior, Madibo, Boudiaf, Akram Afif, Al-Mannai, Almoez Ali.
Palestine’s path has been far tougher, coming through a tense playoff where they edged Libya 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw to book their sixth—and second consecutive—Arab Cup appearance. Before that, they came heartbreakingly close to reaching the fourth round of World Cup qualifiers, denied only by a 97th-minute Oman strike.
Their steady rise continued at the 2024 Asian Cup, where they pushed eventual champions Qatar in a narrow 2-1 Round-of-16 loss. Those lessons should serve them well as they face the hosts again in the opener.
Rami Hamada has become Palestine’s standout figure, and rightly so. His two crucial saves in the shootout against Libya is the reason the Lions of Canaan are even in this tournament. With the team lacking real firepower up front, Hamada’s reliability between the posts will be vital in keeping them competitive throughout, thus making him their undisputed key man.
Palestine Probable Starting Lineup - Hamada (GK) ; Nabhan, Termanini, Saleh, Al Battat, Hemdan, Ameed Sawafta, Mustafa Zeidan, Qunbar, Oday Dabbagh, Tamer Seyam.
Qatar will naturally step in as favourites, armed with far greater attacking firepower. But since mid-October, their only real test has been a friendly against Zimbabwe—which they lost—raising small questions about match fitness.
Palestine, meanwhile, head into the fixture better prepared after playing three matches in November, including their tense playoff. Even so, despite the difference in preparation, it’s hard to picture anything other than a Qatar win.
