VIRUS-HIT ATLETICO STILL LOOKING TO BOOK SEMI-FINAL PLACE!

  • RB Leipzig enjoyed successful season, finishing third in the Bundesliga

Atletico Madrid to win 2-1 to progress to the Semi-Finals!

  • Tournament: Champions League 2019-20
  • Venue: Lisbon, José Alvalade Stadium

Match Preview

Atletico was given a scare earlier this week when two of their players, Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko, tested positive for coronavirus. The remainder of their squad, fortunately for Madrid, tested negative, though will still face a tense wait until a final test six hours before the game against Leipzig on Thursday.  Assuming the game can go ahead, Los Colchoneros will fancy their chances against their German rivals.

They are well-versed in European knockout football, reaching the Semi-Finals three times in the past six seasons - including the Final twice.  Simeone’s players are notoriously tough to play against, seemingly relishing the hard-working physical aspect of the game that other teams take for granted.

RB Leipzig will be no pushovers, however, despite losing their best player Timo Werner to Chelsea. They equalled their opponent’s league finish this season (third), topped their Champions League group ahead of Lyon, as well as blitzing last year’s finalists Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the last round.

It’ll be an intriguing contest.

RB Leipzig Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): D W D L W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Manager Nagelsmann has developed an attractive brand of football
  • Solid at the back with the second tightest defence in Germany

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Losing Timo Werner will be challenging
  • Their opponents are famously tough to play against

RB Leipzig has a real gem in their young manager, Nagelsmann. In fact, he’s the youngest-ever manager to guide a team to the Champions League quarter-finals, at just 33. His side has produced an exciting brand of football in his first season in charge, as well as proving tough to break down at the back.

The Germans conceded only one goal more than Atletico in the league this season while scoring 34 more - showing they have what it takes at both ends of the pitch.

Despite losing their best player and top goalscorer in Timo Werner, such is the system which they have in place at the club, others have stepped in to fill the void.

Star Man – Marcel Sabitzer

The Austrian midfielder has been in fine form and has really stepped up since the departure of Timo Werner. Scoring twice in the win over Spurs in the Round of 16 will mean his confidence is sky-high coming into the Quarters.

Atlético Madrid Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W D W W D

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Vastly experienced at this level of competition
  • Will be on high after knocking out last year’s champions Liverpool

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Have found it difficult to score goals this season
  • Would rather be the underdog than the favourite

Fun fact – Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have only ever been knocked out of the Champions League by a side featuring Cristiano Ronaldo.  Real Madrid four times (including twice in the Final), before Juventus last year. Both teams are now out of the competition.

But despite seeing off Liverpool in the last round, not all is rosy for Atletico. Finishing third in La Liga behind Real Madrid and Barcelona is no crime, but they have struggled in front of goal this season. Having seen star-striker Antoine Griezmann depart for Barcelona last summer, the goals have dried up.

Although they still have big-name players like Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix and Diego Costa to call upon, the magic has disappeared at times this season, even if their defence remains as watertight as ever.

Simeone will be demanding his side use all their European experience against the free-flowing Germans on Thursday.

Star Man – Alvaro Morata

The Spanish striker has found form this season, with 16 goals. He has his critics after a poor spell at Chelsea, but his quality can fire Atletico to victory.

Winning Prediction

  • A high-energy encounter - both teams going toe-to-toe
  • Tight in terms of chances, with only a goal to separate the sides
  • Atletico’s experience to make the difference

Both teams will be well-rested – Atletico has had a month’s rest, with Leipzig close to six weeks. As we saw when Lyon knocked out Juventus, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of match practice.

Leipzig missing Timo Werner will be a huge blow for the Germans, especially when their opponents are so famously tough to break down.

When it comes to this stage of the Champions League, few teams in recent years know how to get a result like Atletico Madrid. They should be too strong for the plucky Germans this time around.
