  • Paris Saint Germain will fancy their chances after Quarter-Final comeback
  • Mbappe was sensational coming off the bench to help see off Atalanta
  • RB Leipzig will enjoy underdog status and impressed against Atletico

PSG to win 3-1 to progress to the Final!

  • Tournament: Champions League 2019-20
  • Venue: Lisbon, José Alvalade Stadium

By ‘big club’ standards, PSG is a young upstart – a mere 50 years old, with more money in the bank than history at the top of the game. It’s incredible to think, however, that RB Leipzig are one of the babies of the game – at just 11 years since their formation in May 2009.

Since then, they’ve risen from the fifth division in German football to the Bundesliga and now find themselves in the Champions League Semi-Finals in their third season in the competition. A meteoric rise by anyone’s definition.

PSG will undoubtedly be the favourites on Tuesday. They have assembled a €400m strike force with players’ names talked about all over the world. Neymar, Mbappe, Icardi. But Leipzig has enjoyed their underdog status, using it to great effect when knocking out both Spurs and now Atletico Madrid from the competition.

Both teams play attractive football – it’s set up to be a great game.

Teams Preview

RB Leipzig Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W D L W W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Ambition flows throughout the team
  • Have few weaknesses in the system they play

Reasons to be fearful:

  • PSG will sense this is their time to reach the final
  • Atletico did not test them as much as PSG will

To reach a Champions League final a mere 11 years after formation is a miraculous achievement – even more so with a 33-year-old manager and a record signing of just £27m in 2016. Contrast that to their opponents, who in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have two players who cost close to €400m combined.

In many ways, Leipzig tick all the boxes. They have a young, athletic team led by a tactically astute manager whose nickname is ‘the young Mourinho’. Instead of big names, they have a dynamic team full of ability. They should expect a far tougher challenge in the Semis, however. Atletico was so empty of ambition in the Quarters that Leipzig only had to face two shots on target all game.

With a fully-fit Mbappe now back alongside Neymar and Icardi, Leipzig’s defence is sure to be a lot busier this time around.

Star Man – Marcel Sabitzer

The playmaker was terrific in the Quarters, providing the assist for the first goal and was heavily involved for the second. Getting him on the ball will be key to Leipzig’s chances.

Paris Saint-Germain FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W W W W W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Know their strikers can blow away any team
  • Confidence will be high after comeback against Atalanta

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Rely heavily on Mbappe and Neymar
  • Pressure will be huge as the favourites

Often teams who win the Champions League blitz through the competition barely breaking a sweat, always seeming in control.

Others, like Liverpool last season, and potentially PSG this time around, need a famous comeback to kickstart their push for the trophy. The French side certainly won’t be short of confidence, having overturned losing positions against both Dortmund and Atalanta in the previous two rounds.

They possess the world’s most exciting, not to mention expensive, forward players and know that whatever happens at the back, they can outscore anyone.  RB Leipzig did not create too many chances against a poor Atletico side in the Quarters. PSG will know that if they keep them quiet, it could be a successful night for them.

Star Man – Kylian Mbappe

He showed his worth after being substituted on after an hour against Atalanta. It was his excellence that sparked the comeback and works so well with Neymar’s technical quality.

  • Exciting attacking football from both teams
  • PSG need the first goal to settle any nerves that pressure will bring
  • RB Leipzig will stay patient and keep it tight

The longer the match stays goalless, the more nervous PSG will become. They are the ones who have fluffed their lines in this competition before – expected to succeed but fallen short.

RB Leipzig will try to keep the game tight, not allow PSG’s star players too much time or room, and grab a goal if they can themselves.

PSG will have other ideas. They will look to explode out of the blocks on Tuesday night, putting a couple of goals past the Germans before having a chance to settle.

Mbappe and Neymar deserve to play in the big matches – the biggest may be just around the corner.
