Expect a chaotic tactical battle at the Bernabéu. Álvaro Arbeloa’s European veterans face a Monaco side desperate to fix their reputation on the continent. Real usually control the ball at home, so the visitors will need to be clinical on the break to get behind Madrid’s high defensive line.

Keep an eye on Kylian Mbappé and Folarin Balogun. Mbappé is the biggest threat on the pitch, with a ridiculous nine goals from just five games. For Monaco, Balogun carries the scoring load, having hit the back of the net three times in six matches.

Current Standings: Real Madrid sit in seventh place with 12 points. They are well ahead of Monaco, who are stuck in 19th with nine points and really need a result to climb the table.

Head-to-head Stats: The history between these two is perfectly even. They’ve met twice before (back in 2004), with each side taking one win and both teams scoring five goals total across those games.

Real Madrid CF Preview

Real Madrid go into this clash at the Bernabéu with a lethal attack. They are putting up 2.17 goals per game in this Champions League campaign, scoring 13 times in six matches. However, a shaky defence takes some of the shine off those numbers.

The team let in 1.17 goals per European game, a trend bettors should watch since Madrid currently sit seventh in the league phase. On top of that, their recent domestic form shows just how unpredictable they are. Los Blancos have smashed in 13 goals over their last five games but have given up eight at the other end, including three in a recent shock loss to Albacete.

A massive injury list has left the squad's defence wide open. Muscle and ankle problems will keep keeper Andriy Lunin, and defenders Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy, out until late January.

While Trent Alexander-Arnold is back training after a hamstring issue, missing so many key defensive players makes it much more likely we'll see chances for both teams. Because Madrid score so much but look so thin at the back, the stats point toward a high-action game in both boxes.

Real Madrid (4-4-2): Thibaut Courtois - Federico Valverde, Raul Asencio, Antonio Rüdiger, Álvaro Carreras - Rodrygo, Dani Ceballos, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Jude Bellingham - Gonzalo García, Vinícius Júnior.

AS Monaco FC Preview

Monaco come into this tough away fixture sitting 19th in the table. They’ve only managed seven goals in six European games, a pretty low average of 1.17 per match. This lack of bite up front is a real problem when you consider their defensive leaks.

They’ve conceded 1.33 goals per game so far, leaving them with a negative goal difference. Their backline looks even worse lately; they’ve shipped nine goals in their last five matches, including 3-1 losses to Lorient and Lyon. In that same span, they only managed to score seven.

Injuries are making life even harder for the visitors. The manager is having to get creative with his lineup for this big game. Serious knee injuries mean they are still without defensive rock Mohammed Salisu and playmaker Takumi Minamino.

They are also missing goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky and defender Christian Mawissa until February. With Paul Pogba also out with a calf injury and Michal a doubt due to illness, Monaco travel to Madrid with a skeleton crew that rarely keeps clean sheets in big matches.

Monaco (4-2-3-1): Philipp Köhn - Vanderson, Thilo Kehrer, Jordan Teze, Caio Henrique - Denis Zakaria, Lamine Camara - Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Biereth, Aleksandr Golovin - Folarin Balogun.

Real Madrid should win this one comfortably. Their attack is too fast and too strong for a Monaco defence missing stars like Hradecky and Salisu. That said, Madrid’s own injury issues mean they’ll likely give up a goal. A 3-1 win for the home side looks about right, so 'Real Madrid to win and Both Teams To Score' is the smart bet.
