While Ukraine is competing in its fourth UEFA European Championship, Romania is playing in its sixth EURO, but first since 2016. It will be a touching occasion for Edward Iordănescu to become the first coach in the Romanian dugout at a EURO since his father Anghel in 2016. Both coaches, meanwhile, are in control at a major tournament for the first time.

The Tricolorii had a fantastic qualification run, finishing first in their group and going undefeated to advance to the finals while giving up just five goals in ten games. Ukraine held their own before placing third behind England and Italy. They then overcame Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in the play-offs, scoring all four of their goals in the second half of those matches, including three in the last six minutes.

Romania Preview

Romania has not participated in a major tournament since 2016, so they are hoping to erase the memory of a disappointing group stage exit. Romania had a more successful qualifying campaign this time around, finishing unbeaten and atop a group that included Switzerland and Israel, despite facing a group considered tougher on paper.

With the possible exception of experienced forward Nicolae Stanciu and Tottenham's Radu Dragusin at center back, Romania's team isn't widely known. However, under manager Edward Iordanescu, they've become a well-drilled unit and could surprise some people in Germany.

Veteran striker Denis Alibec is not available, so Denis Dragus and former Reading player George Puscas are competing for the starting striker role. Horatiu Moldovan of Atletico Madrid should start in goal ahead of the more experienced Florin Nita.

Romania Probable Starting XI: Moldovan; Stancu, Puscas, Man; M. Marin, R. Marin, Cicaldau; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, and Bancu

Ukraine Preview

A left-back injury concern is plaguing Ukraine before their opening matchup with Romania in Euro 2024. After reaching the quarterfinals of the Euro 2020 competition, Serhiy Rebrov's squad is confident about their chances in Germany. Ukraine's roster boasts genuine quality and will be expected to qualify from Group E despite a challenging qualifying campaign.

At Real Madrid, goalkeeper Andriy Lunin adeptly covered for the injured Thibaut Courtois for the majority of the season, while Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mykhailo Mudryk saw consistent action at Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

After a fantastic season with Girona, Artem Dovbyk will go up against Roman Yaremchuk for the central striker position, with Mudryk starting on the wing. Fears regarding Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko's injury have been allayed by manager Rebrov, with Zinchenko ready to step in as a replacement.

Ukraine Probable Starting XI:  Lunin; Stepanenko; Sudakov; Zinchenko; Tsygankov; Yaremchuk; Mudryk; Konoplya; Zabarnyi; Matviyenko; Mykolenko

Group E at Euro 2024 is a real nail-biter. While Belgium reigns supreme on paper, Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine are all hungry for that runner-up spot. This opening match between Ukraine and Romania is crucial. Ukraine, likely backed by the neutral crowd, boasts an in-form Andriy Lunin at goalkeeping and a talented midfield featuring Zinchenko and Mudryk. We predict a close match, with Ukraine edging out a narrow 2-0 victory.
