Russia holding the advantage over Denmark in Group B in race for knockout stage
Russia 1-1 Denmark
Tournament: UEFA Euro 2020 | Venue: Copenhagen, Parken
Bet NowRussia have won one of their two matches at the Euros so far, falling initially to a strong Belgium side before bouncing back and beating Finland.
They sit second currently, but it is a potentially dangerous position to be in with bottom nation Denmark within touching distance themselves.
Russia have been one of the quieter teams at the tournament so far, scoring just once and moving into second place by their victory over debutants Finland. Win here and they guarantee themselves second place, lose and it all depends on other results.
Denmark starting off their tournament in tragic circumstances, following the collapse of midfielder Christian Eriksen, who has now left hospital following successful surgery. They were also beaten by Belgium, leaving them pointless at the bottom of Group B.
They must beat Russia by a two goal margin here to stand a chance of progression to the knockout stage.
World Ranking: 38
Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Champions, 1960
Predicted Finish This Year: Round of 16
Reasons to be cheerful:
In prime position to qualify in second place
Now have three wins from the last six games in all competitions
Reasons to be fearful:
Only scored one goal so far
Denmark will want to end emotional tournament on a high
In a group where Belgium were always likely to lead the way, Russia will be proud of how they have put themselves into a controlling situation over the remainder of Group B.
Just one win has seen them rise into second place, but with Finland entering this competition as debutants, and Denmark suffering a tragedy in the first game, Russia have managed to capitalise.
They will want to score more goals of course, with just the one so far. Indeed, they are a tough team to predict, showing few consistencies between the first match and the second.
If they can secure victory here, and second place in doing so, they’ll feel confident heading into a Round of 16 clash against Wales.
Star Man – Aleksey Miranchuk
Has Russia’s only goal so far and adds decent support to the big Artem Dzyuba up front.
World Ranking: 10
Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1992
Predicted Finish This Year: Group Stage
Reasons to be cheerful:
Still have a slim chance of qualification
Good news about Christian Eriksen could give them a boost
Reasons to be fearful:
Need to win by two clear goals to finish inside top two
Have looked a little toothless in attack
The news that has been welcomed around the Danish camp this week is that Christian Eriksen has been released by the hospital treating him following a cardiac arrest in the opening game of their campaign.
Although he is unlikely to ever play football again, his improving health should be a boost to his Denmark teammates who went through a terrible time when it happened.
Nevertheless, Denmark are in a perilous position themselves, needing a significant win over Russia in order to finish in the top two.
It is a slim chance, but many around the footballing world would like to see Denmark remain at the tournament given the sympathy that has been passed on at the events of earlier in the competition.
Star Man – Yussuf Poulsen
Opened the scoring against Belgium and, although Denmark were unable to hang on, it should give him confidence here.
Russia will keep things tight
Denmark have to go for it from the start
Home support will cheer Denmark on right until the end
The crowd in Copenhagen erupted when Denmark took the lead against Belgium the other day, and they will be hoping for more of the same here.
If they can get another early lead, then the support of the fans could inspire Denmark on to something great.
Russia will be disciplined and try not to lose the match. Any result is possible, but it could finish all square.
Russia 1-1 Denmark
