On Matchday 2 of the Arab Cup, Sudan braces for another stern test after opening against defending champions Algeria. This time, the Jediane Falcons meet an Iraq side buzzing from a 2-1 win over Bahrain and the momentum of a recent World Cup qualification. But Sudan are far from easy prey, and this one has all the makings of a tight, tactical battle under the evening lights of Stadium 974 at 9:30 PM IST.

Current Standings: Iraq sit comfortably atop Group D with three points, while Sudan’s hard-earned draw puts them level with Algeria in joint second.

Head-to-head Record: These two have crossed paths in a competitive match only once before — and that lone meeting finished all square.

Sudan Preview

After leaving the 2021 Arab Cup without a single point, Sudan have already improved on that in the 2025 edition. Up against one of the favourites and defending champions Algeria, the Jediane Falcons dug deep and earned a gritty 0-0 draw.

They did, however, play the entire second half with a numerical advantage after an Algerian red card, which makes their inability to capitalise a slight frustration — 10 shots, yet none on target, with Yagoub’s strike the only real hint of danger. The Jediane Falcons can take pride in the result, but they’ll know that to start winning games, they must turn those half-chances into something more meaningful.

Sudan’s standout performers were goalkeeper Mohamed Al Nour — with a key save and three clearances — and left-back Ahmed Tabanja, who impressed with two interceptions, four clearances, and six recoveries. Their defensive effort kept Algeria at arm’s length, and once again they’ll need to set the tone while hoping someone up front can finally deliver a decisive goal.

Sudan Probable XI - Mohamed Alinour (GK) ; Yousuf, Mustafa Karshoum, Saeed Ahmed, Boshara ;  Yagoub Omer, Taifour, Khidir; Nooh, Mohamed Abdelrahman, Salaheldin

Iraq Preview

Riding the high of their dramatic run into the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoffs, Iraq rolled that momentum into Matchday 1, becoming the only side in Group D to take all three points. Their 2-1 win over Bahrain did come with a slice of luck — an early own goal and a penalty after a red card — but the Lions of Mesopotamia seized their chances, something Sudan couldn’t quite do in their opener.

Still, after failing to make it out of the group last time, Iraq won’t dare leave qualification to the final match. A point might be enough, but they’ll be going all out for a win against Sudan.

In a major setback, star striker Aymen Hussein — forced off against Bahrain — is reportedly out for the rest of the tournament. If that proves true, the creative and goalscoring burden shifts squarely onto the experienced Ali Jasim, who was second only to Hussein in goal involvements with two goals and four assists.

Iraq Probable XI - Fadhil (GK);  Mustafa Saadoon, Hashem, Munaf Younus, Ahmed Yahya; Zidane Iqbal, Sajad Jassim, Zaid Ismail; Ali Jasim, Mohanad Ali, Amar Muhsin.

Iraq arrive unbeaten in their last six matches, while Sudan have managed just one win in their past ten. And though Sudan showed real resilience against Algeria, another draw won’t help their cause — it would leave them needing a big win in the final game, something unlikely given their scoring struggles.

Taking risks against Iraq also means opening the door for a far sharper Iraqi attack. With form, quality, and momentum on their side, backing an Iraq win feels like the safest call.
