Senegal and Iraq meet on Friday in a winner-takes-all clash as both sides fight to keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 alive.

Senegal’s campaign has been a story of promise without reward. Against France, they frustrated one of the tournament favourites for over an hour before individual brilliance made the difference. 

Against Norway, they were far more adventurous but paid the price for defensive lapses, conceding three times despite enjoying more possession, more touches in the box, more final-third entries, and more shots.

The Lions of Teranga have created chances in both matches, but their finishing has let them down—a recurring issue dating back to the last AFCON, where they missed a tournament-high 17 big chances. 

Even so, Ismaïla Sarr has been a bright spot, scoring a brace versus Norway, while scoring three goals overall in the tournament so far to draw level with Senegalese legend Papa Bouba Diop as the nation's joint-leading scorer at men's World Cups.

Now, Senegal find themselves in a difficult position. Victory alone may not be enough; with a goal difference of -3, they will likely need a convincing win to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Key Players 

Ismaïla Sarr is the man in form. He was outstanding against Norway, consistently threatening in the box and finishing with an xG of 1.21 while converting three of Senegal's six shots on target. 

He will need more support from Nicolas Jackson, whose wastefulness in front of goal has been costly, while Pape Thiaw may also have to turn to Ibrahim Mbaye, who has looked lively and dangerous whenever he has been introduced.

Team News 

Senegal have been dealt a significant blow ahead of Friday's Group I clash, with first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ruled out of the match. Aside from Mendy's absence, there are no other confirmed injury or suspension concerns in the Senegal camp.

One of the goals came from a costly goalkeeping error, while Iraq were unable to find a response, finishing the match without registering a single shot on target. Their closest moment came late on when Al-Hamadi threatened to pull one back, but it was not to be.

The night's biggest concern, however, was the early injury to talisman Aymen Hussein, who was forced off in the opening stages. 

Should he miss the final group game, it would be a major setback for a side already struggling for goals. Iraq must now defeat Senegal and hope other results go their way, but with a goal difference of -6, even a victory may not be enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.

Aymen Hussein remains Iraq's main attacking outlet after finishing as their top scorer in qualifying and scoring on opening day. If he is unavailable, Iraq will look to Ali Jasim, who tends to rise to the occasion, and Al-Amamri, a useful dead-ball specialist who already provided an assist in the opening match.
