The continental battle to crown Africa's best team draws to a glorious end as hosts Morocco take on the Lions of Teranga, Senegal, this Sunday night (Monday 12:30 AM IST) at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. It is fitting that the final features the two highest-ranked teams in the competition, both of whom remain unbeaten till now.

Head-to-Head Record: Morocco have dominated this rivalry over 31 matches, winning 18 times while losing just seven, with the remaining six being draws.

Senegal Preview

Sunday’s showdown marks Senegal’s third AFCON final in the last four editions—a testament to their consistency on the continental stage. Like Morocco, they arrive unbeaten and coming off a dominant semifinal. Against Egypt, they controlled 63% possession (70% in the first half) and conceded just one shot on target—deep in the 95th minute. The only real surprise was that they didn’t score more.

However, Pepe Thiaw has a few problems to solve before the final. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly and midfielder Habib Diarra are both suspended after collecting their second yellow cards in the semifinal against Egypt. Losing two key starters is a major blow, something Nigeria learned the hard way when they had to cope without Ndidi in their own semifinal.

Key Players

In big moments, big players deliver, and for Senegal, that’s Sadio Mane. He proved it again in the semifinal, netting the winner with 12 minutes left. The talisman now has the most AFCON goal involvements over the past decade (11 goals + 9 assists) and has once more stepped up with two goals and three assists this edition. When the pressure hits, Senegal will inevitably look his way

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has enjoyed a quiet tournament with little to do, but on Sunday his presence could be vital, especially if the final goes the distance.

Senegal Probable Starting Lineup - Mendy (GK) ; Diatta, Mamadou Sarr, Niakhate, Malick Diouf, Idrissa Gueye, Pape Gueye, Lamine Camara, Sadio Mane, Habib Diallo, Iliman Ndiaye.

Morocco Preview

Sunday offers Morocco a golden chance to add another trophy to a cabinet that already boasts the recent Arab Cup and African Nations Championship (CHAN) titles. Remarkably, the Atlas Lions went unbeaten in both—just as they have in this AFCON run.

Their path to the final wasn’t straightforward, though. Despite dominating Nigeria in the semis with 51% possession, 16 shots, and holding an attacking Super Eagles side to just two attempts across 120 minutes, they still needed penalties. In the end, it was Yassine Bono’s two clutch saves that punched their ticket to a first AFCON final since 2004.

Senegal bring a similar attacking threat to Nigeria, but with a slower, possession-heavy buildup rather than direct play. That suits Morocco just fine as Regragui’s side already showed in the quarterfinal against Cameroon that they can thrive without the ball, winning despite just 41% possession.

If they execute a similar plan in front of their home crowd, captain Achraf Hakimi could finally lift Morocco’s first AFCON crown in 50 years.

Key Players

Hakimi will have his hands full on Sunday, tasked with containing Sadio Mane and Malick Diouf down his flank. But when Morocco switch to attack, his pace and overlapping runs become a weapon, supplying service for Brahim Diaz up front. After a quieter semifinal by his own standards, Diaz—already on four goals—will be itching to add to his tally and chase the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Morocco  Probable Starting Lineup - Bono  (GK) ; Achraf Hakimi, Masina, Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Aynaoui  Khannouss, Abde Ezzalzouli, Saibari, Brahim Diaz, El Kaabi.

Senegal’s last two AFCON finals produced just one goal between them, with their 2021 triumph decided on penalties. And with both teams conceding only three goals across 12 matches combined in this tournament, another tight, low-scoring affair feels likely.

Two factors could shape the final: Morocco may feel the effects of extra-time from the semis, while Senegal will be weakened by the absence of two key starters. Even so, on paper Morocco look the stronger, and with recent final experience behind them, they’ll enter Sunday’s showdown as slight favourites.
