Sheffield United and Southampton aiming to overturn poor form with plenty to play for at the bottom
Sheffield United 1-1 Southampton
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: South Yorkshire, Bramall Lane
Bet NowOn recent form, Sheffield United and Southampton are almost certainly the two worst teams in the division right now, with the home side virtually nailed on to be relegated, with the visitors suffering the worst run in their history.
Sheffield United won their most recent match, rather surprisingly against Aston Villa, to move them to within 12 points of survival, though must still be favourites for the drop.
Should they win two or three on the bounce however, and that prediction may start to change.
Southampton are battling to avoid a relegation fight. In 14th, they are keeping their heads above water for now, but with one point from their last nine matches, they could be dragged into trouble if they don’t start picking up points again before long.
This could be a game which neither side are prepared to lose, and in which case we could see a tight affair.
Form Guide (all comps): WLLLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Result over Villa in midweek will give them confidence
They would be outside of the relegation zone based on 2021 form
Reasons to be fearful:
Poor record against Southampton
Have the lowest goals tally in the division
Sheffield United have at least made things a little more interesting by beating Aston Villa in their last game, taking themselves to within 12 points of 17th placed Newcastle with 11 games to play.
There is still a long journey back for Chris Wilder’s side, but if they could string a few more wins together in quick succession, it would create some tension for those clubs above them.
Unfortunately, scoring goals has been a huge problem for them all season and, with just 16 goals from their 27 games so far. However, with the dreadful form which Southampton enter this game, The Blades know that this is as good a chance as any to get something from the game.
They’ll climb above 19th placed West Brom with a win here.
Star Man – David McGoldrick
Has scored twice as many goals as any of his teammates, including the winner against Villa in midweek.
Form Guide (all comps): WLDLL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have won all three of their recent contests
Despite dreadful form, remain seven points clear of bottom three
Reasons to be fearful:
Have conceded 25 goals from their last nine games, earning one point
Winless in seven away fixtures
At the rate which Southampton are earning points right now, they could well be dragged into a relegation battle before long.
30 points is rarely enough to survive in the Premier League, and with just one collected over the past nine matches, they will do well to start increasing their tally before long.
In usual circumstances, Sheffield United would be the perfect opposition to play in order to do that, with 21 losses from their 27 games.
However, the Saints’ form has been the worst in the league since the turn of the year and there are no guarantees that they’ll come away with anything here.
Positively, Walker-Peters, Diallo and Minamino have all returned from injury and will be considered for selection here.
Star Man – Takumi Minamino
Scored two goals in his first four Saints appearances before injury – he’ll be looking to pick up where he left off.
A tight game in terms of possession
Chances at both ends
A draw is the most likely result
Neither side will want to lose this one.
For Sheffield United, building an unbeaten momentum is key going into the final 10 matches of the season, while for Southampton, anything on the board is a plus right now, with little added to their tally over the past couple of months.
Returning players could be the key for the Saints here, but a draw is the most likely result.
