Nearly a week into the 2026 Durand Cup, the tournament shifts to Shillong with an all-Meghalaya showdown as debutants Nongkseh SS & CC take on Shillong Lajong in the opening Group E fixture. Langsning FC and Mumbai FC complete the group, making every point crucial from the outset.

While Nongkseh will be eager to mark their maiden Durand Cup appearance with a memorable performance, Shillong Lajong will be determined to go one better than last season's semifinals  exit and begin their campaign on a winning note.

Head-to-head Record: It will be the first meeting between the teams in Durand Cup though they have met in other regional competitions.

Shillong Lajong FC Preview

Shillong Lajong will be making their fourth straight appearance in the competition, and if you are a Red Dragons fan, there is a lot to look forward to. They head into the tournament following a valorous attempt to reach the Indian Super League last season, where they fell short by just one point after finishing second in the Indian Football League 2025/26.

One of the striking features of their season was their formidable home record—recording 4 wins, 2 draws, and just 1 loss in 7 matches at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue for their Durand Cup 2026 opening day clash.

Another highlight was their lethal attack, which produced a lot of goals with the likes of Phrangki Buam and Everbrighton Sana contributing the most with a combined total of 15, and both are in the squad for this year's Durand Cup.

If that wasn't enough, the Red Dragons have further bolstered their attack by signing Nelson Rymbai from Langsning FC, who top-scored in the Meghalaya State League (MSL) 2026 with 23 goals. This signing comes after Lajong's own run to the MSL 2026 semifinals.

Meanwhile, the side has strengthened its defense by bringing in Brazilian centre-backs Arthur Pangaro and Dequinha—a clear sign that they aim to go beyond the semifinals this time.

Interestingly, in the last two editions of the competition, the Red Dragons were knocked out in the semifinals, losing to NorthEast United on both occasions

Shillong Lajong Probable starting Lineup

Ranit Sarkar (GK); Badondor Marbaniang, Kenstar Kharshong, Ephraim Lalremtluanga, Mebanaibok Kharbudnah, Damaitphang Lyngdoh, Gladdy Kharbuli, Manbhakupar Iawphniaw, Phrangki Buam, Sheen Sohktung, João Victor de Paula

Nongkseh SS & CC Preview

Nongkseh SS & CC also head into the new season full of belief. Founded in 1969, the club spent decades as a grassroots community project before enjoying a remarkable rise over the past two years.

Their resurgence has been marked by three major trophies—the 2025 SSA Champions Cup, where they stunned Shillong Lajong 2-1, the Chief Minister's Gold Cup, and most recently the Meghalaya State League title.

Nongkseh's MSL triumph was even more impressive as they went unbeaten throughout the campaign. Hardy Cliff Nongbri claimed the Golden Ball, while Guidle Syiemlieh won the Golden Glove, and forwards Chesterpoul Lyngdoh and Sheen Sohktung combined for 22 goals to spearhead the attack.

The league title also secured the club a place in I-League 3, ensuring they arrive at their maiden Durand Cup campaign brimming with confidence and familiar with two of their Group E opponents.

Nongkseh SS & CC Probable starting Lineup

Guidle Syiemlieh (GK) ; Banraplang Pyngrope, Hardy Cliff Nongbri,  Banpynkhrawnam Nongkhlaw, Banskhemlang Mawlong, Kynsaibor Lhuid, Kitboklang Pale, Pynbhalang Suting, Chesterpoul Lyngdoh, Sheen Sohktung, Shano Tariang

Although Nongkseh SS & CC know Shillong Lajong well from the local circuit, most of their recent success has come against rotated or weakened Lajong sides. This time, they face a full-strength outfit with far greater experience at the national level.

Coupled with Shillong Lajong's impressive home record and proven quality, the Red Dragons enter the contest as deserved favourites. Expect Nongkseh to put up a spirited fight, but Shillong Lajong should have enough to start their campaign with a victory.

Shillong Lajong to win (1-3).
