SOUTHAMPTON FC vs ASTON VILLA FC Match Preview & Analysis

This one is especially hard to call, with two very evenly matched teams going head to head in the middle of the table.

Southampton have somewhat drifted from the form which temporarily took them to the top of the Premier Table a month or so ago, but remain a very good side indeed, and one capable of causing Villa problems.

The Saints have a number of injury concerns for this one, but the tried and trusted players such as Ings, Adams and Ward-Prowse will be confident of laying their mark.

Aston Villa are level on points with Southampton, though have a game in hand over the Saints, and two games in hand over most teams above them.

However, their form will need to dramatically improve as they have suffered defeat in three of their last four league matches, as well as going nine meetings without a win against Southampton.

Teams Preview

Southampton FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WDWLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Great recent record over Aston Villa

29 points is their second-highest tally ever at this stage of a season

Reasons to be fearful:

Since their manager’s arrival, no side has dropped more points from winning positions (47)

Just one win in seven league matches

Southampton can re-energise their season with a win against Aston Villa here, though will need to improve upon recent form which shows just one victory from seven matches, although that one win was against Liverpool.

The Saints will look to their record over Aston Villa for inspiration, having gone undefeated across their last nine meetings, winning the last four.

One thing their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl must address is their tendency to drop points from winning positions, having done so on more occasions than any other side in the league since his arrival three years ago.

Against a Villa side who are not in the best of form either, the Saints have a great opportunity here to bounce back.

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

Claimed yet another assist against Arsenal in midweek, taking his total to nine for this season, making it already his most successful campaign.

Form Guide (all comps): LLLWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Two games in hand could take them into top five spots

Ollie Watkins aiming to score in three consecutive league matches

Reasons to be fearful:

Three losses from four matches ends a run of five without defeat

     Poor away form lately

Like Southampton, Aston Villa have also slipped considerably from their peak position of 2nd earlier in the season.

They have been hit hard by Covid-19, the chief reason why they have two games in hand over most other teams in the league, but their form since returning shows that it has had a longer-lasting effect than anticipated.

Losing three from four will be tough for Dean Smith to take, having watched his side blow away teams like Liverpool in the opening weeks of the season.

One positive is the return to form of Ollie Watkins, who has netted in his last two games having gone nine league appearances without one.

It’ll be a tough game against the Saints, who are naturally energetic in their pressing.

Star Man – Ollie Watkins

Leads the line well for Villa, and is now showing he can consistently provide goals, too.

SOUTHAMPTON FC vs ASTON VILLA FC Winning Prediction

Could be a cagey affair at first

     Possession evenly split

Both sides could take the lead at some point

With these two sides a little out of form to say the least, it’s hard to say what we’re going to get here.

Despite mixed performances of late, both sides possess top quality players and it won’t be long before chances come thick and fast at both ends of the pitch.

The result could go either way, but the Saints could just nick it with a bit of quality.
