SOUTHAMPTON FC vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Match Preview & Analysis

Southampton and Brighton are among the teams with the worst form in the Premier League right now – the Saints have just one win from their last 11 league games, while Brighton have taken just two points from their last five.

It has left the away side desperately close to the relegation zone, with only goal difference separating Brighton from Fulham in 18th place.

Their performances have deserved a higher points tally this season, though results have been going against them for long enough now and they need a strong performance here with Fulham chasing hard.

Southampton have a seven point buffer in their advantage, though have the worst record of 2021 so far. You’d have to think that they are safe this season, but will want to pick up points to make sure.

There is a lot riding on this game.

Teams Preview

Southampton FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DLLWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

The injured Moussa Djenepo could be fit to return

Unbeaten in seven league meetings with Brighton

Reasons to be fearful:

     Conceded a league-high 30 goals so far in 2021

Dropped a league-high 18 points from winning positions this season

What a tale of two seasons it has been for Southampton.

After very briefly topping the table towards the end of 2020, the Saints have endured one of the most terrible runs of form in their history, losing seven on the bounce, and eight of the last 11.

Certainly, they’ve suffered from injuries. Danny Ings has missed large parts of the season and will continue his absence here. Moussa Djenepo picked up a knock against City in midweek, but could be fit to play here.

The Saints’ defence has been the real problem for them lately, conceding nine more goals than anyone else so far in 2021.

Their only positive is their points tally, gathered from their better moments of the season. With a seven point buffer, they won’t be panicking just yet.

Star Man – Che Adams

The youngster has led the line well in Ings’ absence at times this season, scoring against Man City in midweek.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LDLLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Four of Brighton’s five wins have come away from home

Performances have been better than results suggest

Reasons to be fearful:

Haven’t won any of their last six after beating Liverpool

Could lose four consecutive games for the first time since 2019

Brighton have really been dragged down into trouble now.

Just a month ago, the Seagulls were seven points clear of the relegation spots, the same amount Southampton are now, and had won two of their last five games.

Now, they sit above Fulham only on goal difference. Since beating Liverpool with a fantastic performance, they have gone the next six games without victory.

On the positive side, Brighton have played much better away from home, with four of their five wins coming on their travels. Will they be brave enough to go for another here, or will they try and settle for a point?

Star Man – Neal Maupay

The striker has scored five of his seven goals this season away from home.

SOUTHAMPTON FC vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Winning Prediction

     A nervy game

     Neither side wanting to lose

Saint’s shaky defence vs. Brighton’s toothless attack

Here, we have one side who have conceded the greatest amount of goals this calendar year, against a side who have been unable to finish games off at the top end of the pitch.

You’d like to see both sides going for the win, knowing that three points could make the world of difference, however that’s unlikely which is why a draw is the most likely result.

Southampton 1-1 Brighton
