Southampton produced a battling performance against a revived Manchester United side, causing the away team plenty of problems when going forward.

Unfortunately for the Saints, they could neither keep United from scoring, nor could they take one of their own chances in front of goal. It was a disappointing end to a game where they gave so much.

They must attempt to bounce back here, as difficult as that may seem. The mood toward Ralph Hasenhuttl remains mixed among the Southampton fans, who are concerned about the progress made under the Austrian.

Chelsea have also been less than perfect so far this season, although for a team of their size, it still means they are on the verge of a top-four place.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have been up and down from week to week, losing badly to Leeds before bouncing back and claiming a slender win over Leicester.

Can they make it two wins on the bounce?

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Showed great spirit and determination against Man United

Defence were hard to break down for much of the game

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one win from last 15 meetings with Chelsea

Defeat could leave them in the bottom three

At times, Southampton bossed the game against Manchester United, taking the game to their opponents with a drive and determination usually seen in teams well above them in the league.

As it happened, they came away with nothing, something you feel could happen quite a lot this season unless they learn to take their chances in front of goal when they come.

Their midfield looks polished, of course. James Ward-Prowse consistently adds energy and quality, while new signing Lavia looks like a bargain alongside him.

It is upfront where they look short of quality. Che Adams has goals in him, but needs more opportunities than most to find the back of the net. The likes of Armstrong and Aribo are also wasteful in front of goal.

Against Chelsea, they must try and rattle their opponents, as Leeds did a couple of weeks ago.

It’s a tall order to play United and then Chelsea a few days apart, but if they can grab something then it’ll boost their confidence greatly.

Star Man – Romeo Lavia

For an 18-year-old, the signing from Manchester City looked composed and driven in the heart of midfield. He’ll need another excellent game for his side to stand a chance against Chelsea.

Chelsea FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Continue to pick up wins despite not being at their best

Sterling’s first goals for the club should turn his form around

Reasons to be fearful

Could struggle in front of goal against a well-organised Saints defence

Issues off the field could distract current squad

Despite two wins from four games, Chelsea have not appeared at their best in any of their four games this season.

Their defeat to Leeds was the lowest point of the campaign so far, but the draw against Spurs wasn’t frustrating, while wins over Everton and Leicester have not come as easy as they would have last season.

It’s obvious that they are missing a world-class striker at the top end of the pitch, although Raheem Sterling showed his worth to the team with two goals in the victory over 19th-placed Leicester.

They are also missing some control in the middle of the park, with Ngolo Kante a real miss through injury. They’ll also miss Conor Gallagher, who was sent off in the win over Leicester last weekend.

Nevertheless, they have an excellent record against Southampton over the years and are strong favourites to extend their winning run here.

Star Man – Raheem Sterling

The big-money signing finally scored his first goals of the season in Chelsea’s last game and more will be expected from him as the season progresses. His quick runs will be vital against a deep Saints defence.

     Chelsea should dominate possession

Southampton will have chances of their own

     Sterling to score or assist

Often, it’s when a side is not at their best and still winning that you should beware of them.

Chelsea haven’t played to the standards set by Manchester City or Arsenal so far this season, but they aren’t far off the pace in terms of points due to their winning attitude.

It could come in useful again here, as Southampton will battle hard to try and prevent another defeat to a Big Six team.

Don’t think that it’ll be an easy game for Chelsea, although they remain favourites nonetheless.
