The pressure has once again started to build on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s shoulders, with Southampton losing their last two games and four out of their first seven this season.

Those two most recent defeats have come against Aston Villa and Wolves, two teams near them in the table and likely to be competing for similar places come the end of the season.

You feel that they need to pick up points from these sorts of games against the likes of Everton, especially with Manchester City and Arsenal coming up later in the month.

Everton finally claimed their first win of the season in their last game, beating a poor West Ham side by 1-0. It is what their performances over the past month or so have deserved, earning four consecutive draws.

Can they now push on and make the best of some of the talent Frank Lampard has at his disposal? He’s assembled a good enough squad to push on up the table.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won their last home game against Chelsea

     Beat Everton 2-0 in February

Reasons to be fearful:

Everton have proved a tough team to beat this season

Have conceded the opening goal more than any other team this season

Southampton have had quite the wait since their last home game, which they won by beating Chelsea 2-1.

Since then, they have travelled to Aston Villa and Wolves and lost both fixtures, something which has seen the pressure begin to build on the team.

The players will hope that playing at home will help their chances, although they’ll need to do so with greater quality than they have in recent times.

In their favour, they won the corresponding fixture last season, beating the Toffees 2-0. Should they beat Everton this weekend, it’ll be the first time they’ve claimed consecutive home victories since February last season.

The Saints have quality going forward, but they must be more secure at the back. They’ve conceded 11 goals from their seven games so far, five more than Everton.

Star Man – Che Adams

With four goals, the Scottish striker has three more goals than anyone else in the Saints squad. He needs support from others around him.

Everton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Jordan Pickford fit to return in goal

     On a five-match unbeaten run

Reasons to be fearful

Full back Patterson is out through injury

Have lost on seven of their last nine trips to Southampton

Everton had built up a reputation of being the draw specialists in recent weeks, having come away with a point from four games consecutively.

That’s why securing their first win of the season was so important to them. Their seven points from seven games looks a lot better than it did before and they can now start to think about pushing up the table.

They’ve had more time since then to work on aspects in training, plus the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin upfront could come this weekend. Lampard has put together a decent squad at Everton, and eventually they’re likely to click.

Against a Southampton team that often blows hot and cold, Everton could feel that they have a chance to pick up their second win on the bounce.

Star Man – Neal Maupay

The forward has his critics, but his winning goal against West Ham was of high quality. While Calvert-Lewin returns to fitness, Maupay will need to continue to lead the line.

Should be even in terms of possession

     Everton are in better form

     One goal could settle it

Everton could take the next step in their revival under Frank Lampard by securing an important away win against Southampton.

The Toffees have good players in every position. Having Jordan Pickford available once again in goal will be huge for them. With quality from front to back, they could cause the Saints a world of problems if they click.

Southampton are at home, which could make the difference. Their previous two defeats have been on their travels.

However, with the confidence Everton will have received by drawing against Liverpool and beating West Ham, they might take the three points here.
