Contrary to the expectations of many, Southampton put up a dogged fight against Manchester City as they went down by just one goal. Not only that, they almost had a good deal of possession against the Champions, and got praised for that from none other than Pep Guardiola. In the end, the lack of real opportunities in the game cost them and that will need to change against Everton on Sunday. 

So far in the competition, the Saints have had an average possession percentage  of 54.43%, but they have only 6 goals to show for it with an xG of 10.7. That's 0.67 per game and it was 0.21 against City. That stat needs improvement, if they are to get out of that relegation zone. 

Ryan Fraser was suspended for Southampton's trip to Etihad but will be expected to return on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ross Stewart, Will Smallbone and Gavin Bazunu are all out with Flynn Downes.

Not long ago, Everton met Southampton in an EFL Cup game, only to be knocked out by the Toffees in penalties. Come Saturday, Dyche, on his first visit to Southampton, will be eager for a payback and change of record of having lost seven of their last ten matches at the St. Mary's stadium. 

When it comes to defending set-pieces, along with Wolves, Southampton have got the worst record this season by conceding 7 goals. Add to that, they have conceded six via errors and three from headed goals. Crosses into the box and utilising the weakness of set pieces will be the way to go for Everton in this contest. 

Good news for Everton as Jarrad Branthwaite is fit and ready to make a comeback. However, there's some doubt regarding the participation of Dwight McNeil, who limped off late in the Fulham game.
