Arguably the biggest news of the week, other than Manchester City reaching the Champions League Final, is that Brentford’s Ivan Toney has been banned for eight months for betting offences.

It means he cannot take part in matches or training until January 2024, an incredible amount of time to be forced to sit out for a player in the peak years of his career.

How will Brentford cope without their star man? Their European hopes aren’t quite over yet, although they sit in 9th place with Aston Villa and Spurs ahead of them. They’d need to win both remaining matches.

Tottenham can take a large stride towards European football next season by winning here, and could overtaken Brighton into 6th if they do so.

Their current position would be enough for the Europa Conference League, while the Europa League would offer greater prestige.

Spurs’ form has been dreadful for some time, of course, so they’d need to improve greatly.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Lost just one of their nine league matches against Brentford

Harry Kane has been in exceptional form despite his team’s mixed fortunes

Reasons to be fearful:

Four defeats from their last six in the league

Conceded 17 goals during that period

The way that Tottenham’s season has been heading, you wouldn’t be surprised if they lost their remaining two games of the season and finished behind Aston Villa and Brentford in 9th.

Despite Harry Kane’s outstanding form, he hasn’t been able to drag the rest of his underperforming teammates forward, especially with multiple managerial changes this campaign.

There’s an outside chance that Spurs could claim 6th, although with Brighton’s form and games in hand, it’s unlikely. Add to that Spurs’ recent form, conceding 17 goals and losing four of their last six, and it makes their task even harder.

Their form against Brentford is excellent, losing just one of their last nine meetings, although Spurs were in a much better place during most of those matches.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Kane has scored in more games this season – 24 – than anyone else. The fact that he can still have a stellar season in what has been disastrous for his club tells you everything about his undoubted quality.

Brentford FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Unbeaten in their last eight London derbies

Three wins from their last four in the league

Reasons to be fearful

Ivan Toney will be a huge miss going forward

Lost three of their last four away fixtures

For Brentford to be without Ivan Toney for eight months is virtually unthinkable.

The England forward has scored 21 goals in 35 appearances this season, and has contributed a lot more to the team than just putting the ball in the back of the net. He’s also Brentford’s leader in shots on goal, third in terms of assists and fourth in minutes played.

He is vital to how Thomas Frank likes his team to play and it’ll be interesting to see how they fill the gap in the summer transfer market.

In the interim, Brentford remain a dangerous side, winning three of their last four, including a 2-0 victory over West Ham at the weekend without Toney in the side.

Their record against Spurs is poor over the years, but this is arguably the best time to play them.

Star Man – Bryan Mbeumo

No one has scored close to Toney’s 21 goals this season, but Mbeumo has often been excellent alongside him, netting seven and assisting six times.

Tottenham Hotspur stadium could be flat

     Brentford will start quickly

No result would be a surprise

At this stage of the season, you feel that no result where Spurs are involved would be a shock.

They have the capability to outscore their opponents, largely due to the everlasting quality of Harry Kane, or they can produce an absolute stinker and lose in dismal fashion.

There’s no knowing what kind of performance they’ll produce here, but you would imagine that on their final home game of the season, they’ll want to give their fans a good send off.
