London derbies are always fascinating encounters, and especially so when the two teams involved are side by side locked in a chase for a Champions League spot next season.

Tottenham and Chelsea sit level on 33 points, after nine wins and six draws each, although Spurs sit a place higher and have played a game fewer.

Spurs, in truth, have looked somewhat jaded recently, having to make do without star striker Harry Kane for the past couple of games due to injury and with other players performing below the high standards they set themselves earlier in the season.

They come into this having lost two on the spin.

Chelsea, although a place lower, are a team with more optimism in their ranks after the appointment of new manager Thomas Tuchel, who secured his first win at the second time of asking against Burnley at the weekend.

They’ll be hoping to kick on from here and pull a winning streak together.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Top four is still in sight and Spurs have a game in hand

Only Man City and Arsenal have a better defensive record

Reasons to be fearful:

Only won four of 10 home games in the league

Mourinho has failed to beat his old club his previous six attempts

Tottenham are, according to Jose Mourinho at the weekend, suffering from a “lack of energy” right now. Not exactly something that Spurs’ fans want to hear before one of the biggest games of their season.

Although missing talisman Harry Kane, it will have been hard for fans to watch Spurs play so poorly against a Brighton side trying to avoid relegation, eventually losing 1-0 with the winners controlling the game against Mourinho’s men.

Although cup wins have helped to paper over the cracks, this is a different Spurs side to the one that topped the table towards the end of last year, with their spark missing and forward combinations not as effective.

Here, they will face an uphill battle to penetrate a Chelsea defence who have not yet conceded under their new manager.

Star Man – Son Heung-Min

Hasn’t scored in any of his last four league games, but must rediscover his form from earlier in the season in the absence of Kane.

Chelsea FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLWDW

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Yet to concede under Tuchel

Confidence will be high after securing first win against Burnley

Reasons to be fearful:

Have only scored twice in last three league games

Away form is only the 11th-best in the division

As usually happens when a team secures their first win under a new manager, a new confidence grows around the club that this could be the start of something special.

Thomas Tuchel has an embarrassment of riches surrounding him at Chelsea, with players both expensively new and talented youngsters at his disposal. Aside from minor concerns over Ziyech’s fitness, they’re all ready to play, too.

He must start getting more of a tune from his forward players, with the two goals scored so far coming from wing-backs. Big money signing Timo Werner has now gone 12 league games without a goal, while Kai Havertz is spending most of his time on the bench.

With N’Golo Kante fit to resume after injury too, Tuchel’s first team will start to take shape as he’ll start his strongest XI here.

Star Man – Christian Pulisic

Came off the bench to assist Marcos Alonso’s goal against Burnley and is likely to start here.

Chelsea will be the more attacking of the two sides

Spurs will play on the counter but will be limited with Kane

     The Blues are favourites

Chelsea will aim to take advantage of a Spurs side in mixed form right now, without their key player and by their own manager’s admission, lacking energy.

Although a point isn’t much good to either side, you feel that Mourinho will set his side up to not lose the game initially and anything more than a point is a bonus.

Chelsea will come out and attack the game, which is why they should collect the points.

Chelsea to win 2-0
