Efficient Tottenham host Everton in intriguing clash
Tottenham to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: LONDON, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Bet NowWe are beginning to spot a familiar pattern with Tottenham this season, and it is a dangerous one for other teams.
Under Antonio Conte, Spurs have become ruthlessly efficient, scoring goals despite not always playing the most attractive football and winning games despite not always being on top.
Those are remarkable qualities for a team to have, and it’s no wonder that Spurs are only four points off Arsenal at the top of the table. At home, you would imagine we’ll see more of the same here.
Everton had started to make real progress under Frank Lampard of late, winning two and drawing four of their six games leading up to the clash with Manchester United.
It didn’t go the Toffees way, despite opening the scoring. It was their first defeat in seven and their league position is a relatively comfortable 7th.
Can they bounce back here?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Excellent record over Everton in the league
Good win in midweek Champions League game
Reasons to be fearful:
Were second-best for large periods against Brighton last weekend
They have conceded more than Everton this season
Tottenham keep on ticking the right boxes under Antonio Conte, in particular, the one that says ‘win games.’
In all competitions, they’ve now won nine of their last 12 fixtures, going back to the start of the season. It’s a run that has taken them into the Premier League’s top three, only behind City and Arsenal, and to the top of their Champions League group.
Spurs have an excellent chance of extending that good run of form here. Against Everton, they’ve lost only one of their last 19 meetings in the league. As records go, it’s an intimidating one.
Conte’s men also appear to be coming into form at the right time. Son, who started the season quietly, has found himself among the goals lately, while ex-Everton player Richarlison is improving too.
They will be wary of an Everton response, given that the Toffees lost their last game, but they should have too much for them here.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Kane has good records against most of the teams he’s played against, but Everton is clearly one of his favourites. He has 13 goals in 14 appearances against the Toffees.
Reasons to be cheerful
Defeat against Manchester United shouldn’t derail them
Could move into the top half with a victory
Reasons to be fearful
Dreadful record against Spurs
Will miss Anthony Gordon through suspension
Everton will have felt slightly dejected after that defeat to Manchester United last weekend.
Frank Lampard’s men were high on confidence after a run of six unbeaten, and they had typically enjoyed a good record against United at Goodison Park over the years.
To lose, then, without playing particularly well, will have come as a disappointment. Another negative is that Anthony Gordon picked up his fifth booking of the season, and will therefore miss out here.
On the plus side, having got the opening goal against United means that they’ve now scored in eight of their last nine, while conceding fewer goals than Tottenham over the course of the season.
They have a dreadful record against Spurs, but can they put that right here?
Star Man – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
The talented centre-forward came off the bench against United and caused chaos in their penalty area. If he starts here, he could do the same to Tottenham.
Harry Kane likely to score
Will be a low-scoring game
Everton must press high up the pitch
With both sides have a stern defence, you feel that this could be a tight, low-scoring contest.
Everton will be keen to bounce back from their defeat last weekend, while Tottenham know how to quietly go about their business and win football matches.
While Everton won’t be easy to beat, you feel that Tottenham, with Kane, Son and Richarlison up front, have the firepower to take the game away from them.
