Tottenham looking to bounce back from tough week against revived Leeds
Tottenham to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wembley, London, Wembley StadiumBet Now
Tottenham have suffered a pair of setbacks over the past week, losing in both the Premier League and the Carabao Cup.
It won’t derail the project that Antonio Conte is working on, with the club progressing through to the knockout phase of the Champions League and sitting inside the top four domestically.
One main concern will be the manner in which Spurs have started games recently, seemingly on the back foot and often falling behind. They haven’t been able to come back on either of the last two occasions.
Leeds, on the other hand, have seen their form recover in recent weeks. Having suffered four defeats on the bounce, Jesse Marsch’s men have won their next two in the league.
It’s a timely return to form for the Yorkshire team, moving them up to 12th in the league table. It is set to be an up-and-down season for Leeds, but they could cause Spurs some problems here.
Lots at stake for both teams.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Conte will demand a response from his players here
Kulusevski and Richarlison should be fit to start after injury
Reasons to be fearful:
Worrying habit of going behind in games
Leeds’ fast counterattacking could cause problems
Tottenham need a good response here, having lost their last two games in league and cup this week.
Spurs remain in 4th place, but a defeat here could put that in danger. They’ve now lost three of their last four in the league, largely due to their inability to start games on the front foot.
Their soft starts have allowed opponents to ease their way into the game and often take the lead. Leeds will look to take advantage of that, especially with their fast, counterattacking style.
The positive for Spurs is that Kulusevski and Richarlison could well start the game, with both having missed recent games through injury.
Spurs have looked short on goals during the absence of those two players and they’ll be a big boost for Conte here.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Even during his team’s struggles, Kane has kept on firing in front of goal. He was brought off in midweek due to fatigue, but he’ll want to continue playing in every game for Spurs.
Reasons to be cheerful
Back-to-back wins have eased pressure on Jesse Marsch
Have scored eight goals in their last three games
Reasons to be fearful
Will fear a response from Spurs
Midweek defeat in the cup will have dented confidence
There is no doubt about the attacking quality in Leeds’ squad and we saw it to the full extent in their comeback win over Bournemouth last weekend.
Jesse Marsch’s side were 3-1 down just after halftime, although three quickfire goals from Leeds in the final half-hour saw them claim all three points.
We know about the electric atmosphere that they generate at Elland Road, but they also claimed an important and surprising win over Liverpool at Anfield recently.
They will need a similar performance to that one here at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs will demand a response from themselves after two defeats in a row, but Leeds have qualities of their own.
If they can catch Spurs with a fast start and grab an early goal, anything can happen.
Star Man – Crysencio Summerville
Summerville has scored three goals in his last three games, including winners against Liverpool and Bournemouth. His confidence must be sky-high right now.
Can Tottenham start on the front foot?
Leeds happy to play on the counter
Spurs’ front three to be the difference
You would expect Tottenham to show a response here, having lost three of their last four and two on the bounce.
They must start to play better from the start, rather than relying on a strong comeback in the second half. With Richarlison and Kulusevski back alongside Kane, we should see a more proactive team here.
Leeds will have their moments on the counterattack, but it’s unlikely they’ll be able to keep Spurs out.
