With each week that passes, you wonder if this will be the game when Liverpool will click into gear and go on a run that sees that climb up the table.

Unfortunately for Reds’ fans, that just isn’t happening right now. Whether it’s through loss of form, loss of motivation or injury concerns, things just aren’t clicking in the league for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Their sloppiness in defence was their downfall yet again last weekend, with poor errors leading to Leeds’ first goal. Now sitting in 9th place, you feel that this could be a must-win game for the club.

Tottenham, on the other hand, continue to win games despite not having a great deal of conviction in how they go about it. They had to come from behind yet again against Bournemouth last weekend.

Winning that game, as well as their midweek crunch tie in the Champions League against Marseilles, means that their fine run of form continues.

They know they face a tough opponent here, however.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won six of their last eight games in all competitions

Are very difficult to beat under Conte

Reasons to be fearful:

Missing Kulusevski, Richarlison and now Son upfront

     Continue to start games poorly

The Tottenham machine keeps rolling forward as the weeks go on, with Antonio Conte firmly at the helm and continuing to challenge in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Spurs head into this game six places and 10 points ahead of their opponents, the first time they have hosted them and been above them since October 2017.

The challenge Conte has is that Spurs’ record against Liverpool is poor. They are winless in each of their last nine meetings with Liverpool, with their opponents scoring against them in 19 of their last 20 clashes.

They must also head into this game without key players upfront, namely Kulusevski, Richarlison and Son Heung-min. The three of them combined make up a huge goal threat alongside Harry Kane.

A win here would be a superb statement to the rest of the league, but their form against the big teams this season has been less than expected – no wins against Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea.

Star Man – Harry Kane

With other forwards out injured for Spurs, Kane will shoulder even more of the goalscoring burden than usual. The England striker has a good record of seven goals in his 15 games against Liverpool, but only one win.

Liverpool FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Liverpool have the players and experience to show up here

Great record against Spurs over the years

Reasons to be fearful

This is a must-win game for a club 9th in the table

Don’t have defensive solidarity coming into this game

Usually, when Liverpool head into a big clash, one thing is for certain: they will be difficult to score against.

With Virgil van Dijk at the back, teams have found it almost impossible to outscore Liverpool in seasons gone by, but that has changed this year.

Whether due to fitness issues or confidence problems, van Dijk just isn’t the same player this season. He is most reluctant to tackle, more hesitant in his decision making.

This means that Liverpool’s other issues further up the pitch are being highlighted even more, because they are neither blowing teams away nor keeping them out at the back.

They have a good record against Tottenham over the years and will need some of that confidence back here. James Milner is set to miss out, but club captain Jordan Henderson will return after missing the last game.

Star Man – Darwin Nunez

With seven goals in 15 games, Nunez has the best goals-per-minutes ratio in Liverpool’s team this season. He has come to the boil at the right time for his team, but he’ll need to be at his best against Spurs.

     Liverpool will likely dictate play

Don’t be surprised to see Liverpool score first

Spurs could come into it stronger in the second half

Although Tottenham hold the upper hand in the league table right now, their record against the big teams hasn’t been the best and they have relied on wins against lower teams to keep their position.

They also don’t have the best record against Liverpool over the years, which is something that will favour their opponents.

We’ve seen Spurs start games slowly before coming back into them in the second half. They can’t afford to give Liverpool too much room, of course.

For Liverpool, you feel that this is a must win, but for Spurs a point will be satisfactory.
