Tottenham will know that there hasn’t been a better time to play Liverpool over the past couple of seasons than right now.

Jose Mourinho is a vicious competitor, and will be telling his side to go for the jugular against a side whose confidence will be shot to pieces right now.

Having said that, Mourinho’s side are lacking a little conviction themselves right now, with just two wins coming from their previous seven league meetings and their quest for top four football stalling a little.

Liverpool are enduring their worst spell of football for a number of seasons, having dropped from 1st to 4th within a couple of weeks as well as losing their unbeaten home record lasting almost four years.

A positive result will be far more important to them than Spurs, but their opponents will smell blood and Liverpool must rise to the occasion.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWDWW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Cup wins have proved a welcome distraction after mixed league form

Mourinho is a master at winning the big games

Reasons to be fearful:

Liverpool will demand a response from themselves after consecutive defeats

Only two clean sheets from last eight league matches

Spurs will sense an opportunity to leapfrog Liverpool into 4th this weekend, despite struggling with their own league form of late.

Leeds and Sheffield United are the only two sides Spurs have beaten since the start of December and with two defeats and three draws during that period as well, the North London club are in need of a morale boosting victory.

Their fantastic strike partnership of Son and Kane are still producing the goods, with four goals from their last three league matches together. Of course, they could do with more from their other players, with the likes of Bale struggling to keep pace.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Has six goals from his 11 matches against Liverpool so will be relishing the opportunity at facing the Reds’ makeshift defence.

Liverpool FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWDLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Played better in their cup match against United despite defeat

Will demand a response from themselves after poor form

Reasons to be fearful:

Defensive absences show no sign of return yet

Spurs will be tough to break down

One of the positives that came out of Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup at the weekend was the resurgence of Mo Salah, who came to life with two goals in a fine performance.

He is Liverpool’s top scorer this season, though has gone five league games without a goal, so it was a welcome return to form that his manager will be hoping he can continue going forward.

The problem for Liverpool remains at the back, with the key question being who partners Fabinho in a makeshift centre back partnership. Rhys Williams is a promising youngster, though his mistake that led to Rashford’s goal underlines why Liverpool won’t be able to rely on him every match.

The Reds will be at full strength going forward here, with Mane coming back into the side to partner Salah and Firmino.

Star Man – Mo Salah

Enjoys playing Spurs, with five goals from his seven league matches so far. His two goals against United show he is back with a bang.

Should be a close match with neither wanting to lose

Both sets of strikers are in fine form, with Salah, Kane or Son likely to score

Liverpool are slight favourites despite poor form

Liverpool will want to avoid defeat at all costs here. Going three on the bounce would have felt ridiculous earlier in the season, but now it’s a real possibility facing the calibre of Spurs.

Tottenham have an opportunity to strike while Liverpool are down, though Mourinho is not exactly known for going all-out attack.

That’s why this one could end as a draw, with Liverpool being the happier of the two.
