Manchester City were gifted a big break when Arsenal lost their game against Everton this weekend. The Gunners had barely put a foot wrong recently but may have allowed City to close the gap.

Pep Guardiola’s men haven’t been at their perfect best this season, although they remain well in the race for the Premier League title with almost half the season still to go.

Although Manchester City don’t have the best record away at Tottenham’s new stadium, they’ll be confident of pulling off a crucial victory here.

Tottenham, on the other hand, appear to be lacking confidence right now. They are in a desperate fight for a Champions League place, although it appears that they are losing that battle with Manchester United and Newcastle.

Antonio Conte underwent surgery this week, meaning that his place on the Tottenham sidelines isn’t certain. Spurs need all the help they can get right now.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won all four home games against City at their new stadium

Harry Kane needs one more goal for the Tottenham goalscoring record

Reasons to be fearful:

In danger of losing three consecutive home games

Lost all five games against teams above them this season

Tottenham may be without manager Antonio Conte this weekend, with the Italian requiring an operation earlier this week. If he is missing, it would be another blow for a team that need all the luck they can get.

Spurs moved through to the FA Cup fifth round this week, beating Preston in a comfortable 3-0 victory. It keeps their hopes of a cup run alive, although they will turn their attentions to a top-four race here.

Remarkably, the North London team has won all four games against City at their new stadium, although that probably doesn’t reflect where Spurs are right now in their journey under Conte.

They could lose three successive home games for the first time since 2008, having not scored in either of the previous two.

In terms of those on the pitch, Pedro Porro may make his debut at wing back having made a loan switch from Portuguese club Sporting.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Kane has four goals from his 11 appearances against City and needs one more to become Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer. He deserves it, having been sensational for Tottenham for so many years.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Could go within two points of Arsenal at the top

Won six of their last seven in all competitions

Reasons to be fearful

Poor recent record away to Spurs

Have dropped almost as many away points this season as the whole of last

Despite Manchester City dropping slightly below their exceptionally high standards of previous seasons, they are still within touching distance of leaders Arsenal.

A win here will see City go within two points of the Gunners, although Pep’s men will have played a game more. Those two upcoming clashes will be mouth-watering.

Such is City’s inconsistency this season that this could be the first time this season that they’ve won three league games in a row. With six more games to come in February, their squad will be tested to the limit.

City made the surprising decision to allow Joao Cancelo to leave on loan in January, although the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish and, of course, Erling Haaland remain in top form.

Star Man – Erling Haaland

Haaland in top form is a very scary proposition for opposition defenders. His 25 league goals in 19 games is just one behind Sergio Aguero’s record for the entire season.

Manchester City will control possession as usual

Tottenham have previously had success on the counterattack

Defeat would be a blow to either side

If Manchester City claim victory here, they will likely go into that clash against Arsenal in a couple of weeks’ time within touching distance.

To do that, they must claim a rare away win against Tottenham, something which has eluded them in recent years.

Tottenham have had great success in the fixture by using the counterattack to their advantage, but they are not in the best form here. City are favourites to claim three points.
