Tottenham delivered one of the worst first-half performances in recent memory at the weekend, conceding five goals inside the first 21 minutes before going on to lose 6-1 to a rampant Newcastle.

The club has since offered to refund supporters who travelled to the game, but that won’t make the humiliation any easier to take. Ryan Mason has now replaced Christian Stellini as interim manager.

A top four finish is surely out of the question now, with the club in 7th and six points behind Manchester United in 4th. They’ve also played two more games than their opponents here.

Manchester United crept through to the FA Cup Final at the weekend, edging past Brighton although the Red Devils were nowhere near their best.

However, it’s now two finals in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge which is certainly progress. They have looked like they’re running out of steam a little, so they’ll need to pick their game up here.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have to respond after a dismal performance at the weekend

Always have a chance with Kane and Son upfront

Reasons to be fearful:

Lost four consecutive meetings with United

Conceded 28 league goals in 2023 – only Leeds have let in more

Tottenham will fear the reaction of their home crowd if they put in a similar performance as the one at the weekend.

It’s the sort of result that stays with you and the players will be reminder of that for some time. They have to bounce back immediately, and it may help that Ryan Mason is at the helm instead of Christian Stellini.

It looks as though Spurs may have to settle for a place outside the top four this season, which will come as a bitter blow to their supporters, alongside everything that’s gone wrong for them.

Spurs are currently suffering their worst run against United – four consecutive defeats – since a run of seven between 2001 and 2004.

With Son and Kane upfront, they always have a chance, but they will need a huge improvement here.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Scored his 26th goal of the season against Newcastle, though he won’t have been happy with the scoreline as it was. Needs one more for his 100th Premier League home goal.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Won their last three in the league without conceding

Lost just three of their last 21 visits to Tottenham

Reasons to be fearful

Bruno Fernandes is an injury doubt

Lost all five away games against top seven teams this season

Manchester United progressed to the FA Cup Final at the weekend, although their opponents Brighton can feel hard done by.

The number of games that United have played this season – the most of any top-flight team across Europe – looks to have caught up with them, with a number of injuries and fatigued players across the squad.

Indeed, Bruno Fernandes may be the latest casualty to spend time on the sidelines, having rolled his ankle at the weekend. He would be a huge miss for the Red Devils here.

Elsewhere, Harry Maguire could return to the team having been suspended at the weekend, although Ten Hag may opt to keep the partnership of Lindelof and Shaw.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

Rashford has dropped off in terms of scoring recently, with just one in his last five. He has four goals in his 13 appearances against Spurs and will want to add to that here.

Tottenham could be nervy after the weekend

United must play with more energy

     First goal crucially important

The start of this game will tell us a lot about how it’ll play out.

Tottenham should come out of the blocks desperate to put in a good performance after the weekend. A strong start would get their home supporters right behind.

On the other hand, if Manchester United make the better start then it could be another long game to endure for Spurs players.

With Spurs’ confidence on the floor, and United’s energy levels low, a draw could be the cards.
