Tottenham aiming to bounce back from poor defeat by hosting in-form Newcastle
Tottenham to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: LONDON, Tottenham Hotspur StadiumBet Now
Most fans, regardless of what team they support, would have predicted a close encounter between Tottenham and Manchester United in midweek.
Antonio Conte has made Spurs difficult to play against, but against United, it was they who offered very little throughout the game. If not for Hugo Lloris in goal, it could have been a much greater margin than 2-0.
It means that Spurs failed to go above Manchester City for the time being, with Pep Guardiola’s side not playing in midweek.
Newcastle arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in fine form, having gone unbeaten in their last six league games.
They have one of the tightest defences in the league and have earned points against big teams this season, including both Manchester clubs.
Depending on how other results go for them, they could move as high as 4th, so they’ll be fired up for this one.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Will aim to bounce back immediately after defeat
Home record has been superb this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Newcastle will be as difficult to play against as United
Have struggled in big games this season
Tottenham rightfully deserve their place in the Premier League’s top three teams right now.
While they haven’t been the easiest on the eye at times, they possess a world-class manager who has made them organised, efficient in front of goal, and painfully difficult to beat.
At least, that was the case until this week, when Manchester United rolled Spurs over in what was probably their poorest performance of the season. A Conte side is rarely so easily beaten in every aspect.
They will seek to rectify that as quickly as possible, ideally with a win here. Their home form has been exception, with Harry Kane in especially good form in front of his own fans.
They will be especially interested in the challenge of scoring past one of the tightest defences in the league right now.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Wasn’t given a sniff in front of goal due to excellent performances from United’s defenders, but Kane will back himself to return to form here.
Reasons to be cheerful
One of the best defences in the league
Hopeful that Saint-Maximin could be fit
Reasons to be fearful
Opponents will bounce back strongly from defeat
Tough run of fixtures
It is against teams such as Tottenham that Newcastle can really test how far they have come under their new ownership.
Since the takeover was finalised just over a year ago, with Eddie Howe’s appointment not long after, the Magpies have come on quite a journey and signed a fair number of quality players.
Their progression is there for all to see right now, not least in the fact that they are 6th in the table going into this game. They’ve had some fine results this season, including draws against both Manchester clubs.
You wonder if their squad can cope with such demanding fixtures, having played both Manchester United and now Tottenham in the space of a week.
While their ambitions are high, they are not a top club just yet. Still, they will give an excellent account of themselves against Spurs and could well come away with something.
Star Man – Miguel Almiron
The striker is in red-hot form right now, with almost everything he touches finding the back of the net. With new signing Isak and fan-favourite Saint-Maximin out injured, Almiron’s form has been vital for Newcastle.
Tottenham will demand a response here
Should be an even contest
Both teams to score
Tottenham may count themselves lucky to have been beaten by both Arsenal and Manchester United in recent weeks, but remain in the top three.
That shows just how good they have been in their other games this season, but also shows that they will expect better in big games.
This is another big game, not least because of how much Newcastle have progressed this season. The Magpies have quality at both ends of the pitch and this won’t be an easy game for either team.
Having tasted defeat in midweek, and being the home side, Spurs are the slight favourites.
