Tottenham have been thoroughly criticised this week after they crashed out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage, putting up very little fight as AC Milan held out for a 1-0 victory.

This followed a dismal exit of the FA Cup just a week before, with Championship side Sheffield United winning by the same margin. It means that Tottenham’s only goal left this season is to finish in the top four.

With Liverpool closing Spurs down quickly, a top four spot is no longer as likely as it once looked. The questions surrounding Conte’s future at the club have intensified – another defeat here could spell the end.

Nottingham Forest are not quite safe this season, although they have shown enough to us in recent times to suggest that they have the quality to remain in the Premier League.

Steve Cooper’s side haven’t tasted victory in any of their last four games, but hold a four-point buffer to the bottom three.

They’d love the opportunity to get one over Spurs here.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won 28 of their previous 31 games against newly promoted side

Must surely respond after a poor week

Reasons to be fearful:

Have lost as many games as they’ve won so far in 2023

It appears only a matter of time until Conte departs

What started out as the promise of a successful season has, yet again, ended in doom and gloom for Tottenham, or that’s how it looks right now.

With the club out of the Champions League and the FA Cup, it appears that a top-four spot is the only salvation for them this season. With Liverpool closing the gap fast, they may not even achieve that.

Judging by the way in which his team plays, and the comments he often makes after matches, few people believe that Conte will be Spurs’ manager at the start of next season. It’s just a question of whether he will make it to the end of this one.

They do, at least, have a good record against newly promoted teams, winning all but three of the 31 such fixtures. They’ve also won their last three league games against Nottingham Forest.

Can they put their week from hell behind them here?

Star Man – Harry Kane

Questions surrounding Kane’s future grow every time that Spurs fail. The summer is seen as the ideal time for the England captain to leave but he will still fight for Tottenham to finish as high as they can in the league.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Came from behind twice to claim a point against Everton last week

Are due a positive result after four games without victory

Reasons to be fearful

They have the worst away form in the league this season

Lost eight of their last 10 games in London

After starting 2023 on a high – winning three and drawing two of their first five games – Nottingham Forest’s form has tailed off in recent weeks.

Steve Cooper’s men have failed to win any of their last four, losing two of them. Unfortunately, both of those defeats have been away from home.

It means that, normally, they may fear this kind of fixture, against a team going for a top-four finish. However, Spurs are not in a great frame of mind right now. This could be a good time to play Conte’s side.

They must guard against a response from Spurs, of course. Forest must also consider that they would be bottom of the league if only away games were taken into account.

Star Man – Brennan Johnson

Johnson continues to impress in a Forest shirt, despite being one of the more inexperienced members of the squad. His two goals against Everton mean that he now has seven for the season, although just one away from home.

     All three results are possible

Spurs must get over their recent disappointments quickly

Forest can damage Spurs on the break

The question will be how quickly Spurs can shake off their disappointments of the past week or so?

The could respond with a fast opening and knock two or three past Forest in the first half. Or, they could toil and struggle and frustrate their home crowd even further.

Nottingham Forest could play themselves into the game if they choose the right moment to counter, especially with the pace of Johnson.

Spurs are favourites but only if they show up in the right frame of mind.
