Tottenham seeking to hang onto European position but face an improved Wolves
Tottenham to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: LONDON, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Bet NowSuch is the positioning of the Premier League right now, 7th place Tottenham are almost as close to 12th place Wolves in terms of points as they are to 4th place Chelsea.
Spurs have watched their top four hopes drift away in recent weeks and months, picking up just enough points to remain in the top six or seven teams, but struggling to make any headway in catching up to the clubs above them.
They were poor in defeat in their last game, going down to an aggressive Leeds side who controlled the match brilliantly.
Wolves are much improved of late, however it shows just how poor their season has been when you consider that it still won’t be enough for a top half finish.
The Wanderers have won three of their last five, however, including their last game against Brighton. A win here would close the gap between the two teams to eight points.
Form Guide (all comps): DWLWL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Ryan Mason has two wins from his three league games in charge
Should be motivated to claim a top six finish
Reasons to be fearful:
Won just one of the last four meetings with Wolves
Just one clean sheet since change of manager
Tottenham will look at teams ahead of them in the table and know that they could be occupying those spots right now if they had taken one or two of their opportunities throughout the season.
Unfortunately, a poor run of form led to the sacking of Jose Mourinho, and while Ryan Mason has done well enough since being put in temporary charge, was never expected to take them into the Champions League.
A realistic aim over the next three games is to catch West Ham in 6th place, a team who are struggling at the wrong time from their point of view. A win here could lift Spurs above them.
Wolves won’t be easy to play against, but Spurs will have a point to prove after losing to Leeds in their last game.
Star Man – Son Heung-Min
Has scored in his last three league games for Spurs, taking his goal tally to 21 for the season so far.
Form Guide (all comps): WWLDW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Three wins from last five represents good form
One defeat from their last five
Reasons to be fearful:
Haven’t had four wins across six matches all season
Have only scored 15 first half goals this campaign
It shows how disappointing this season has been from a Wolves perspective that you can be on the verge of winning four games from the last six and still be five points off the top half.
Often, their trouble has been starting games slowly, only scoring 15 of their 35 goals in the first half of matches. Although they play better in the second half, it is often too late by that point.
That said, they have certainly improved of late, winning three of the last five. Those victories did come against teams 20th, 18th, and 17th in the league respectively, but it’s an improvement on what came before.
Can they gear themselves up for one final push this season?
Star Man – Adama Traore
After a goalless start to the season, Traore has picked up both goals and assists lately and has been one of Wolves’ better players.
Spurs should be favourites
Son or Kane to score
Chances at both ends
On paper, this is a game which Spurs should win.
They have the greater motivation, as well as two forwards in excellent form. Kane and Son both have over 20 goals this season, and Bale has added to that on and off too.
Wolves won’t be easy to play against, especially given their recent upturn in form, but you’d expect Spurs to claim three points.
