Leaders Arsenal looking to recover winning form against inconsistent West Ham
Arsenal to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, London Stadium
Bet NowArsenal and Liverpool served up one of the best clashes in recent months last weekend, with the Gunners heading into a 2-0 lead, only for the Reds to fire back and claim a point.
It’s a result that brings Manchester City firmly back into the title race, especially with Pep’s men having a game in hand and knowing that they host Arsenal at the Etihad later this month.
Nevertheless, Arteta knows that his players have the capacity to bounce back from disappointment and will have his squad revved up here.
West Ham won their last game, an important away victory against London rivals Fulham. It was a necessary response after losing 5-1 to Newcastle a few days earlier.
David Moyes knows that picking up home points will be key to survival this season and will demand everything from his players here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Two wins from their last three in the league
Looking for back-to-back victories and clean sheets for the first time since October
Reasons to be fearful:
Won just two of their last 31 meetings with Arsenal
Will be sucked back into the relegation scrap if they lose
For all of West Ham’s problems of late, their home form has been their lifeline. They’ve only lost once at the London Stadium in all competitions in 2023, and that was their recent 5-1 hammering against Newcastle.
It may still not be enough to keep them afloat this season, but David Moyes will be under no illusion that his players must continue to deliver in front of their own fans to stand a chance.
They also head to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace this month, as well as hosting Liverpool. Most fans are expecting a mixed bag of results from that fixture list, but a couple of wins would be massive.
It’s hard to see one of those coming against Arsenal, of course, especially with their record against the Gunners being so poor.
The Hammers have just eight wins from their 53 Premier League games against Arsenal, with only three coming at home.
Star Man – Jarrod Bowen
If West Ham are to get anything from this game, their ability to counter quickly is crucial. Bowen hasn’t had the best of seasons, but the winger usually saves a trick or two for the big games.
Reasons to be cheerful
Excellent record against West Ham
Have the best away record in the division this season
Reasons to be fearful
Could live to regret their collapse against Liverpool last weekend
Gap to Manchester City is likely to be just three points at kickoff
Arsenal are likely to head to West Ham with Manchester City just three points behind the Gunners, assuming that Pep’s men win their game against Leicester.
With that in mind, Mikel Arteta knows that his players can’t afford any more slip-ups in the title race, especially with their away game against City looming.
They were exceptional in the early stages of the game against Liverpool, racing into a 2-0 lead before being pegged back. They are unlikely to face the same firepower this weekend.
Instead, the Gunners must prepare to be patient against a team that has only lost once at home in 2023.
Their away record is exceptional this season, however. They have the most wins, points, goals scored and tightest defence on the road this season.
Star Man – Gabriel Martinelli
Martinelli was electric against Liverpool, scoring the first goal and providing the assist for the second. His contributions from the left-wing are so vital to Arsenal’s success.
Arsenal will dominate possession
The Gunners must be patient against a deep defence
West Ham must choose their moments wisely to attack
The expectation is that Arsenal will bounce back from their draw last weekend to put West Ham to the sword here.
It doesn’t always work that way, although Arteta’s men will be doubly motivated to stay ahead at the top of the table, with City breathing heavily down their necks.
West Ham are better at home than most people give them credit for, but this is a mountain of a task for David Moyes and his players here.
