West Ham continue to flirt with the European spots in the Premier League and did their cause the world of good by beating an in-form Everton side in their last league match.

Although positive, that was actually their first win in five league matches, a run which has seen their league position slip from as high as 5th a few weeks before.

They have struggled for goals of course, with record signing Sebastian Haller now shipping off to Ajax in the transfer window and key striker Michail Antonio missing parts of the season through injury. They’ll hope they can build on the back of that win.

Burnley will be a tough nut for them to crack, however. The Clarets showed Manchester United that they are no pushovers and with their defensive solidarity they should have enough to secure their safety this season.

That being said, they are short of goals entering a crucial part of the season.

West Ham United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LDDWW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Only two defeats in last 10 games have come against Man United and Chelsea

26 points is their highest tally at this stage of a season in six years

Reasons to be fearful:

     Poor recent record against Burnley

No home win in three attempts

West Ham have shown that they have the capabilities to push on higher up the table – they’ve been as high as 5th at one stage earlier on.

After a blip of form which meant just one win from six, they returned to winning ways with a timely victory over a very good Everton side last time. They backed that up by winning their FA Cup match a week ago.

Having sold Sebastian Haller to Ajax, a player who cost them a record £45m just a couple of years ago, fans are worried that The Hammers are now lacking firepower up front, particularly as Antonio has missed large parts of the season so far. Perhaps the plan is to bring in someone fresh to lead the line.

Either way, West Ham will need to be sharp to get past Burnley, a side who almost held out against league leaders Manchester United in midweek.

Star Man – Michail Antonio

Now back from injury, it’s crucial that he stays fit and finds some goalscoring form. West Ham are a top side when he is on song.

Burnley FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLWWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Three wins from five represents good form for The Clarets

Have won last three meetings with Hammers

Reasons to be fearful:

Desperately short of goals – just nine in the league

Failed to score in five of last six away matches

Most fans would agree that Burnley are likely to be safe come the end of the season.

Their experienced manager, two excellent centre backs, as well as a whole team of players who work their socks off for 90 minutes. These qualities very nearly earned a point against Manchester United in midweek, only for Paul Pogba to break their hearts.

In that match, however, what was clear was their lack of attacking ability right now. They barely had a chance in their opponent’s penalty area, and look desperately short of goals – their nine scored is the joint-lowest in the league with Sheffield United.

West Ham will present some challenges to them, but they will feel if they can perform as well as they did against United, they will stand a chance.

Star Man – Dwight McNeil

Changed the game when he came on against United – he is quick, tricky and can create chances in front of goal

Will be a tight game of football

West Ham are favourites, but only just

A point could work well for both sides

You get the feeling that both sides need attacking reinforcements in the transfer window, though may just have to do with what they’ve got.

Antonio is still finding his feet for West Ham since returning from injury and Burnley’s two strikers Barnes and Wood haven’t really got going this season.

The Hammers are the more rounded side and could snatch three points, but this could easily finish all square.

West Ham 1-1 Burnley
