Top four chasing teams West Ham and Everton clash in must-win contest
West Ham to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: London, London Stadium
Bet NowAn exciting clash between West Ham and Everton this weekend could go a long well to showing us whether any of the teams currently chasing a top four position have the quality to pull it off.
Of the chasing pack, West Ham have been the closest for several months this season, occupying a top four spot on and off and only dropping out after an inspired Chelsea overtook them recently.
The Hammers have been an impressive unit under David Moyes this season, dragging them from almost being relegated last year to on the verge of a European place in this. They need to win to keep the pressure on Chelsea.
As for Everton, the North West side have been inconsistent in recent months, winning just one of their last seven games.
The Toffees are nine points off Chelsea, but do have a game in hand with which to claw them closer if they can gain three points here.
Form Guide (all comps): WWLLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won the previous meeting between the two
Have won 17 games in the league this season, their best total in 35 years
Reasons to be fearful:
Kept only one clean sheet in their last eight games
Could lose consecutive home games
The Hammers bounced back well by beating Burnley last weekend, showing that there was still life in their top four push after losing two on the bounce beforehand.
Having Michail Antonio back up front has been a huge boost to manager David Moyes, giving them so much more than just the nine goals he has scored this season.
Declan Rice is also on the mend, but may not be fit enough to return this weekend.
They don’t have the best record against Everton however, despite beating them earlier in the season. At home, West Ham have just the one victory from their previous 12 meetings.
The Hammers will need to improve that here if they are to continue keeping pace with Chelsea.
Star Man – Michail Antonio
Returned with two brilliant goals last weekend to secure victory over Burnley. He’s now 3rd on West Ham’s all-time Premier League goalscoring list.
Form Guide (all comps): DDDWL
Reasons to be cheerful:
One defeat in five has helped to stabilise them
Good record over the years away to West Ham
Reasons to be fearful:
One victory from their last seven games
Equalled a club-record of eight home defeats this season
When Everton were top of the table for four weeks earlier on this season, many predicted that a top four finish was on the cards.
Unfortunately, they have dropped off rather significantly since then and despite periods of good form, have never been able to find the same levels of consistency.
The form of Calvert-Lewin hasn’t helped, despite the England international scoring 20 goals this season. He only has four from his last 17 appearances, however.
The Toffees know that nothing less than victory will be enough here, as they cannot afford the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and indeed West Ham to move further ahead.
Abdoulaye Doucoure could return in midfield for the first time since the start of March after a fractured foot.
Star Man – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Despite his drop in scoring frequency, his goal last weekend against Villa could boost his confidence here.
West Ham enter this in better form
Could be goals at both ends
A win is needed for both sides
With the battle for relegation almost over, and with Manchester City just one win away from being crowned champions, they remaining race of the season is for the top four.
That’s what makes this game so exciting, and West Ham will fancy their chances of grabbing three points here. Everton have the quality to make it a tough game, but their form has just been so patchy over the past few months.
