Things have started to go better for West Ham of late, especially after securing only their second win of the season against Wolves last weekend.

Their Premier League worries have been slightly helped by their good form in Europe, where they play in the Conference League.

Wins in that competition appear to have given them a boost, but they’ll need to find some consistency in domestic competition in order to rise up the table as you expect they will.

October presents a tough schedule for every team, and not least for those in Europe too. Can they build some momentum here?

Fulham lost last weekend, proving those people correct who thought the Cottagers couldn’t cope without Mitrovic. The striker remains an injury doubt here.

London derbies often offer up something tasty, and there is plenty to play for here.

West Ham United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Last weekend’s win should provide some confidence

Unbeaten in last 11 home games against Fulham

Reasons to be fearful:

Have lost two of their last three games against promoted sides

Haven’t won three consecutive games since last December

Consistency is the word that David Moyes’ used this week, alongside momentum.

If West Ham can play with more consistency on a game-by-game basis, his side will build up the sort of momentum that took them into the European places to begin with.

At one stage last season, they were in the Champions League places. Unfortunately for them, their consistency dropped off at the start of 2022 and they fell away. It’s a mixed run of form that has continued into the start of this season.

There are positive signs though. The win over Wolves had more of a familiar feel about it. There are signs that Scamacca is starting to settle, and they’ll expect more to come from their other big signing, Lucas Paqueta.

The Hammers have a fine record against Fulham over the years, and they’ll be confident of securing their third win in the space of eight days.

Star Man – Gianluca Scamacca

His first league goal last weekend means he now has five goals in his first 11 appearances for the club in all competitions. The £30m signing is starting to hit top gear for the Hammers.

Fulham FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

The return of Patrick Bamford is a big boost

A win could propel them into the top half

Reasons to be fearful

Look a different side without Mitrovic upfront

Chalobah is suspended and Tete is an injury doubt

While the goals have been going in for Fulham, and more specifically for Mitrovic, they have looked like a decent Premier League unit.

Unfortunately, the thought on everyone’s mind came true last weekend when Mitrovic came back injured from international duty and wasn’t fit to play in their game against Newcastle.

It didn’t help that Nathaniel Chalobah was sent off in the eighth minute, meaning that he’ll miss out here. However, Mitrovic is key to the way they play, and if he misses out again here, things could go the same way.

The Cottagers also have a poor record away to West Ham. As manager Marco Silva said this week, they also had a poor away record to Brentford, but turned up a couple of weeks ago and beat them.

They will be hoping to do the same again here, although it’s difficult to see them beating a confident West Ham team without their main striker.

Star Man – Bobby De Cordova-Reid

After Mitrovic, De Cordova-Reid is arguably Fulham’s best route to goal. The tricky midfielder can usually create one or two chances per match, but he’ll need support in the final third.

West Ham will have a confidence about them

If they score first, they should win

Fulham must hope Mitrovic is fit

If West Ham can build up some form of momentum this month, we could see them shoot up the table quite quickly.

The Hammers have fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester United to come later on in October, so picking up points against the likes of Fulham should be a priority.

The London Stadium will be rocking here, especially with their team winning in midweek too.

West Ham should have too much for their opponents.
