Two or three weeks ago, Manchester United appeared to have their Champions League spot cemented for the season, which goes nicely with winning the Carabao Cup and getting to the FA Cup Final in a few weeks.

However, a draw against Tottenham and defeat to Brighton in midweek means that Liverpool have closed the gap on their historic rivals in 5th place.

The gap could be as little as one point if the Reds win their game against Brentford the day before this one. United simply need to win here to remain in control of their own destiny.

West Ham aren’t quite assured of their safety in the Premier League this season, although a four-point gap is a handy advantage at this stage.

The Hammers have lost three games in a row, however, and will be keen to add another victory to their belts, one that would virtually secure survival this season.

West Ham United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won two of their last three games played on a Sunday

A chance that Rice, Aguerd and Soucek could return from illness

Reasons to be fearful:

Winless in their previous six against Manchester United

Conceded nine goals in their last three home games, winning none

West Ham are in a tricky position right now, albeit one that offers a little more breathing space than the teams below.

While they aren’t certain of their place in the Premier League next season, they have a handy four-point advantage over the bottom three heading into the final four games of the campaign.

You’d think that one more win from those games would be enough to cement survival, but the Hammers are struggling to get over the line right now, losing each of their last three.

Declan Rice, Nayef Aguerd and Tomas Soucek all missed their midweek defeat to Manchester City through illness, but could all play some part here if deemed fit enough to return.

The Hammers record against United is poor, having won none of their last six home meetings.

Star Man – Lucas Paqueta

The Brazilian has started to come to life a little more for West Ham of late, scoring two and assisting two in his last four home appearances, compared to just two assists in his first 16 matches at the London Stadium.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Won their last two away games against West Ham

Victorious in 12 of their 16 games against bottom-half teams this season

Reasons to be fearful

Won just two of their eight away games in 2023

Just one victory, against Fulham from their past seven visits to London

Manchester United’s late, late defeat to Brighton in midweek means that they need to win here to take some of the pressure off themselves that’s been building of late.

If Liverpool beat Brentford a day before this game, there will be just one point between the two teams, although this game represents one of United’s two games in hand. The other is against Chelsea.

Victory here would be only their third away win in 2023, with four defeats coming during that period. Their form away from Old Trafford has been dismal at times, although it does improve against lower-half clubs.

They’ve won on each of their last two visits to the London Stadium and that will be their aim once again.

Alejandro Garnacho is approaching match fitness once again after a spell out injured, otherwise the team is likely to be similar to recent games. Christian Eriksen should return after missing out against Brighton.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

Rashford has four league goals against the Hammers in the past, and needs just one more this season to hit 30 – the first time he will have hit that milestone.

Manchester United will have more of the ball

West Ham will be happy to play on the counter

Could be a tense start with neither team at their most confident

The outcome of this game will depend greatly on which teams starts the better here at the London Stadium.

If West Ham sit back and defend deep, especially without key players like Rice, Soucek and Aguerd, Manchester United’s confidence will build and they’ll fancy their chances of wrapping the game up.

West Ham must press forward and not allow their opponents to build momentum. If the home side can pinch an early goal, we could be in for a cracking game.

That said, the away side know that they have to win here in reality, and are favourites to do so.
