Relegation candidates West Ham face tough test against in-form Forest
West Ham 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, London Stadium
Bet NowWest Ham cannot afford too many more slip-ups right now, despite manager David Moyes receiving backing from the board this week.
A poor defeat against Tottenham last weekend means that the Hammers slipped into the bottom three and you feel that another negative result here could spell trouble for Moyes and his players.
They are not currently favourites to go down but unless they find their feet they could find themselves marooned at the bottom.
Nottingham Forest have climbed well away from the bottom these days – now five points and five places ahead of their opponents this weekend.
Steve Cooper’s men have drawn and lost in their last two games, so they will want to bounce back with victory before long.
They face a number of tough challenges over the next month, so collecting points here is a must.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won seven of their past eight games against promoted teams
Four of their five wins have come at home this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Just 19 goals scored from their 23 games
Only one win from their last six
West Ham’s season is slowly starting to slip away from them.
They started poorly before recovering at the start of 2023, winning in both the Premier League and in Europe to continue their run of improved form.
However, the tables have turned on Moyes once again and it would appear that the Hammers are set for a relegation battle for the remainder of the season.
They’ve never been the greatest scorers in the league, but their powers in that aspect have waned this season. New signing Scamacca hasn’t hit the ground running and the likes of Antonio and Bowen have struggled.
Home games are especially important for the Hammers now and you feel that they need to win most of them between now and the end of the campaign.
Star Man – Jarrod Bowen
Bowen hasn’t been at his best this season but has upped his tally to seven goals recently, showing some improvement. When at his best, Bowen is a tricky customer for opponents to deal with.
Reasons to be cheerful
Just one defeat from their last six
Attacking players are stepping up right now
Reasons to be fearful
Worst away form in the league
Serge Aurier has joined a growing injury list
Nottingham Forest can still be considered in a relegation battle, despite the fact that they are five points and five places clear right now. We know how quickly things can change in this league.
However, they now have some breathing space given to them by some excellent performances on the pitch. Their draw against Manchester City last weekend showed the resolve they now have, especially at home.
Indeed, it has been away from the City Ground that they have struggled this season. Forest have claimed just six points from their 11 away games, scoring just three goals. It’s the worst away form in the league.
Now would be a good time to win only their second away game of the season, although it would be a surprise if they did.
Star Man – Brennan Johnson
The youngster has blistering pace and has added goals to his game recently. In partnership with new signing Chris Wood, they now look like a decent attack pairing.
Atmosphere will turn nasty if West Ham go behind
Could be a game light on goals
Forest would be happier with a point than Hammers
Eventually, West Ham need to start winning games if they are to get out of their current mess. David Moyes claims he is used to competing nearer the top of the table but he is far from that here.
Nottingham Forest have some confidence behind them now, especially after claiming a draw against City. They would be happy with a point but will take opportunities to press forward as they become available.
The Hammers need victory, but they haven’t shown they are capable of that recently.
