After Liverpool lost their game against Leicester 48 hours before this game kicks off, West Ham have the opportunity of leapfrogging them. Depending on Chelsea’s result, who also play at the same time, they could even push into the top four.

Either way, it would be a fantastic reward for a much-improved season on the last one, with the club only just managing to stay in the division. Now, after 39 points from their 23 games, they have their sights set on higher prizes.

Here, they have a huge chance to do so against the side bottom of the table.

Sheffield United have certainly improved recently. Having sat on just a single point after 13 games, they’ve taken 10 from their next 10 matches to draw themselves closer to the two teams above them.

Unfortunately, the gap to safety has remained out of sight thanks to the likes of Burnley and Brighton improving themselves.

West Ham United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLWDL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Antonio has returned after a hamstring issue and could be fit to play a role

39 points is their highest tally at this stage of a season in 35 years

Reasons to be fearful:

Ogbonna will miss out at the back after an injury in midweek

The Blades usually give opponents a tough game

West Ham are bidding to avoid back-to-back home matches under David Moyes for the first time, but by winning could take themselves into the Champions League positions.

Those are the incentives for The Hammers against Sheffield United, a team who they are vying to complete a league double over this season after beating them 1-0 back in November.

It’s true that, to their frustration, West Ham often struggle to score goals when their star striker Michail Antonio is missing, as they found out in their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United in midweek.

Here, Sheffield United will make it tough for them, as they so often do, and West Ham will need to improve their chance creation, especially if Antonio is not fit.

Star Man – Jesse Lingard

Was unable to play against his parent club in midweek, but fresh after scoring twice on his debut, Lingard will be fit and raring to go here.

Form Guide (all comps): WLWLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Through to the FA Cup Quarter-Finals after midweek victory

All three victories in the league this season have come in their last six games

Reasons to be fearful:

West Ham are in good form right now

Despite closing the gap on West Brom, teams above them keep on winning

From Sheffield United’s point of view, it’s a shame they have left their good form until this part of the season. Should they have started the campaign in this fashion, they would likely sit higher up the table clear of the relegation battle.

Three league wins from their last six is better form currently than most of the sides in the bottom half, although with a 14-point gap to safety, survival remains virtually impossible.

They certainly have a good chance against West Ham here, however. As we’ve seen from their wins over Manchester United and co. recently, The Blades are fierce competitors and are no pushovers for sure.

Lys Mousset is likely to be fit and ready to play up front, while Enda Stevens has returned to training recently after a spell on the sidelines.

Star Man – Billy Sharp

The veteran striker has scored in two of his last three outings, helping The Blades to two victories during that period.

This should be a tight fought game

West Ham are likely to see the better possession and chances

Could be settled by a single goal

A point is little use to Sheffield United here, with only wins standing them any chance of catching the teams above them.

For West Ham, a point would not be enough to leapfrog Liverpool, and they must surely sense an opportunity to capitalise on some inconsistent results from sides above them.

If Antonio plays, that’ll be a huge boost to The Hammers.

West Ham to win 1-0
