Struggling Wolves go up against revived Brighton
Brighton to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux StadiumBet Now
Brighton got one over their old manager last weekend when they beat Chelsea, the club that Graham Potter joined two months ago.
They were good value for their 4-1 victory, with their intensity and quality throughout the team causing Chelsea no end of problems from start to finish.
It boosted Brighton’s top-half credentials and are now just three points off Chelsea. It was a timely victory for Roberto De Zerbi, with that being his first since his appointment as manager.
Wolves are continuing to look like a relegation candidate as the season progresses, with their bottom three position not helping their situation right now.
They are yet to appoint a permanent manager since Bruno Lage’s sacking and the players look leaderless and without motivation. They are desperate for points here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Lost just one of their last seven league games against Brighton
Draw against Wolves last weekend showed fighting spirit
Reasons to be fearful:
Have not scored more than one goal in any of their last 16 games
Won just two of their last 20 league games
The signs are not looking positive for Wolves right now.
History has not smiled kindly on teams that do not score enough goals across the course of a season. They have never been a team that scores bucketloads of goals, but this season has been particularly bad.
With Raul Jimenez injured and new signing Diego Costa yet to score his first goal for the club, Wolves have only scored six times all season. They have now gone 16 games without scoring more than one goal per match.
This has contributed to their poor form in 2022. They have just two wins from their last 20 league games and it hasn’t showed many signs of improving lately.
Their draw against Brentford showed some fighting spirit last week, but the quality in the final third is still missing.
They badly need a victory here but it’s hard to see how they can manage it.
Star Man – Diego Costa
The fiery forward must find his best form to help his team out of a sticky situation. He needs his teammates to provide the chances for him.
Reasons to be cheerful
Brilliant win against Chelsea shows progression under De Zerbi
Won this fixture 3-0 last season
Reasons to be fearful
Have struggled for wins so far under De Zerbi
Clean sheets have been hard to come by
It will have given Brighton’s fans a great deal of satisfaction to see their club beat the team that their old manager joined just two months ago.
Graham Potter has deservedly earned his chance to manage a team like Chelsea, but he won’t have enjoyed losing to his former club. It is a testament to the work that Potter did during his time at Brighton.
In spite of that, Brighton have found wins harder to come by under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. Before this game, they’ve lost against the likes of Man City and Brentford and drawn against Forest and Liverpool.
That said, they are in an excellent league position, sitting in 8th place. It would represent progression from last season should they finish there at the end of this campaign.
Against Wolves, they know that they have the firepower and the organisation to break their opponents down. It is whether they can keep things tight at the back too.
Star Man – Leandro Trossard
The Belgian seems to improve with every game right now and is rightly expected to earn a place in his country’s World Cup squad. His opening goal against Chelsea was his seventh this season.
Both teams will enjoy possession
Brighton should create more chances
Can Wolves take the lead?
Wolves could certainly do with three points here. It would dramatically improve their league position for starters, potentially lifting them out of the bottom three.
To do so, they must take the lead at some point. Having scored six goals all season, that is easier said than done against an organised Brighton.
Brighton are in good form right now and have the quality to back up their confidence. With the inspiration of their huge win over Chelsea last weekend, they could be favourites to take three points here too.
