Midtable clash sees Brentford travel to Wolves
Brentford to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Molineux Stadium
Bet NowWolves are not yet safe this season, although they are steadily moving in the right direction under Julen Lopetegui.
In 13th place, they remain in the mass of teams fighting against the drop at the end of the campaign, but with a four-point gap ahead of 18th, they are demonstrating enough ability to stay up.
A win here could take them above Crystal Palace into 12th and their home form has been largely good under their Spanish manager.
Brentford have seen their season falter over the past month or so, going four games without victory and slipping to 9th in the table.
Regardless of where they finish, they have enjoyed an excellent campaign, although they will want to finish strongly to set themselves up well for next year.
Can they rebound here?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Collected twice as many points under Lopetegui as before
Recent home wins have come against Chelsea, Spurs & Liverpool
Reasons to be fearful:
Still remain just four points ahead of danger
The joint-lowest scorers this season
The improvement under Julen Lopetegui for Wolves is there for all to see.
In the 15 games prior to his appointment, Wolves won twice, scoring just eight goals. Over the 15 matches of Lopetegui’s tenure so far, they’ve notched up six wins with 16 goals.
Their league position has rocketed as a result, and you would now favour them to stay up this season, despite being four points ahead of the drop zone.
The Wanderers’ home form has been strong recently too, winning four of their last six, including victories over Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea.
They still don’t score enough goals for a Premier League team, and if they do stay up this season, they must fix that over the summer.
Star Man – Matheus Nunes
It took 31 games for Nunes to score his first goal for Wolves but he did it in some style, volleying in against Chelsea last weekend to gift his side three precious points.
Reasons to be cheerful
Played well against Newcastle despite defeat
Still in with a chance of European football
Reasons to be fearful
Pontus Jansson likely to miss rest of season with hamstring injury
Lost their last two games, as many as in their previous 19
Despite Brentford’s dip in form recently, there is no doubt that they have enjoyed a phenomenal season for a club of their size, with their limited means in the transfer market.
While the goals of Ivan Toney have propelled Brentford forward, others around him have contributed too. It’s been a team effort for Thomas Frank this season.
They remain in with a shout of finishing in a European spot this season, although they’d have to reverse their poor form of late.
With just three away wins this season, compared to seven at home, Brentford need a big performance here.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Only Kane and Haaland have more Premier League goals than Toney this season, with the striker netting in their defeat to Newcastle last week.
Brentford to hit back after poor form
Wolves goalscoring troubles to continue
A low-scoring game
Brentford have shown themselves to be too good for this poor form to continue for too long.
The Bees rarely lose matches, so to suffer back-to-back defeats won’t have gone down well with Thomas Frank, who will expect a big response here.
Wolves just don’t score enough goals, and while they have beaten some big teams at home this season, Brentford may just have too much.
